The firm posted a $31 million (\u00a55 billion) loss a year ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>During the period ended March 31, the Tokyo-based firm added 5,075 Bitcoin to its stockpile, a 14.5% increase quarter-over-quarter. With Bitcoin recently changing hands around $79,300, the company\u2019s stash, totaling 40,177 Bitcoin, was valued around $3.18 billion.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Since Metaplanet began accumulating Bitcoin in April 2024, the company has emerged as the digital asset\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/47061\/public-companies-biggest-bitcoin-portfolios\" target=\"_blank\"><span>third-largest corporate holder<\/span><\/a><span>. Like many Bitcoin-buying firms, the company has faced pressure as the digital asset has declined from record highs last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The company\u2019s stock closed at \u00a5327.00 on Wednesday, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/finance.yahoo.com\/quote\/3350.T\/\" target=\"_blank\"><span>Yahoo Finance<\/span><\/a><span>. Shares have advanced 5.8% over the past month\u2014turning higher as Bitcoin\u2019s price has hovered around the $80,000 mark\u2014but they remain 45% lower compared to a year ago.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Despite a declining stock price, the company signaled that its investor base has widened to around 250,000 total shareholders compared with 63,600 last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Metaplanet\u2019s business once revolved around hotel management, but it now derives most of its revenue from selling Bitcoin options contracts. In the first quarter, the company generated $15.8 million (\u00a52.5 billion) from that segment, up sharply from $4.8 million (\u00a5770 million) last year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOur ambition runs along two tracks: continuing to build our Bitcoin position with discipline and patience, while developing the services and businesses that operate atop that foundation,\u201d Metaplanet CEO Simon Gerovich said in a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/gerovich\/status\/2054544064427749793?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener\"><span>post<\/span><\/a><span> to X.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The company, in many ways, has positioned itself as the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/300034\/what-is-microstrategy-mstr-the-bitcoin-treasury-company\" target=\"_blank\"><span>Strategy<\/span><\/a><span> of Japan. Along those lines, Metaplanet has moved to establish a preferred share that mimics STRC, the variable-rate product that Michael Saylor\u2019s Bitcoin giant has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/367391\/strategy-resumes-bitcoin-buys-as-saylor-shifts-focus-to-never-be-a-net-seller\" target=\"_blank\"><span>embraced<\/span><\/a><span> as a source of funding.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>In a separate <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/gerovich\/status\/2054502785027285298?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener\"><span>post <\/span><\/a><span>to X, Gerovich acknowledged that the firm has yet to issue \u201cMARS\u201d and \u201cMERCURY,\u201d dividend-paying products <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/349441\/metaplanet-to-offer-dividend-paying-preferred-shares-to-buy-more-bitcoin-echoing-strategy\" target=\"_blank\"><span>unveiled<\/span><\/a><span> in November. He said the process is \u201ctaking longer than initially anticipated,\u201d but remains committed to bringing them to market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Although Strategy currently pays out dividends monthly on STRC, Gerovich noted that Japanese listed companies typically make distributions once or twice a year.
