This new AI-powered tool lets filmmakers and creative agencies generate images and animated scenes based on real-world locations using Google Street View data, potentially cutting the time and cost of early-stage location scouting and storyboarding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGenerative AI has unlocked powerful ways for creative agencies, film studios, and luxury brands to bring social and advertising campaigns to life,\u201d Google said in a statement. \u201cNow, we&#8217;re helping them anchor their imaginative scenes in the real world with Maps Imagery Grounding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The feature, available in private preview in the U.S. through Google Maps, lets users type prompts into Google\u2019s Gemini <a href=\"https:\/\/cloud.google.com\/blog\/products\/ai-machine-learning\/whats-new-in-gemini-enterprise\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Enterprise<\/a> Agent Platform to generate AI visuals tied to real-world locations. Users can also animate those scenes using Google\u2019s AI video model <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/363077\/google-veo-3-1-lite-cuts-api-costs-half-openai-sora\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Veo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The announcement comes as film studios look to cut costs and streamline pre-production, which often involves sending scouts to photograph sets, waiting for the right weather or lighting, and creating visual mockups. Google also said at Cloud Next that it is launching AI tools for analyzing aerial and satellite imagery, along with new Earth AI models designed to identify roads, bridges, and power lines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese AI updates unlock entirely new possibilities for businesses, data analysts, and urban planners,\u201d Google said. \u201cWhether you\u2019re visualizing a creative concept, planning out a new development, or managing disaster response, our new imagery tools can help you work smarter and faster.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The launch reflects a broader pattern in AI and mapping technology as tools built for one purpose find new commercial uses. In March, Niantic\u2019s spatial AI mapping technology, built in part from optional scans submitted by <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/361302\/pokemon-go-map-world-now-data-training-robots\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pok\u00e9mon Go<\/a> players, was revealed to now help autonomous delivery robots navigate cities in places where GPS struggles.<\/p>\n<p>Despite concessions won during the 2023 SAG-AFTRA and Writers Guild <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/199023\/sag-aftra-continues-strike-amid-ongoing-ai-concerns-in-hollywood\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">strikes<\/a> over the use of AI in film and television production, tensions in Hollywood have continued to simmer.<\/p>\n<p>In June 2024, actor <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/234277\/ashton-kutcher-ai-movie-filmmaking-sora-slammed\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ashton Kutcher<\/a> faced backlash online after he praised OpenAI\u2019s then-new Sora video model, saying it could reduce the need for costly on-location shoots and stunt work. Despite the praise, OpenAI <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/362243\/openai-shut-down-sora-derailing-1-billion-deal-disney\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">discontinued<\/a> Sora this March, underscoring how some early hype around AI-generated filmmaking has yet to materialize.<\/p>\n<p>Last September, SAG-AFTRA condemned the AI-generated \u201cactress\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/342276\/hollywood-actors-union-slams-ai-actress-tilly-norwood-backlash-builds\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tilly Norwood<\/a> as a threat to jobs and human artistry after the union\u2019s 2023 strike secured protections against synthetic performers. Last week, \u201cPractical Magic 2\u201d star <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/news\/sandra-bullock-supports-ai-hollywood-1236724450\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Sandra Bullock<\/a> said Hollywood has to \u201clean into\u201d AI and use it constructively, while Warner Bros. Pictures Co-Chair Pam Abdy said it should help filmmakers make movies better.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have to acknowledge it, we have to understand it, and we have to look at it,\u201d she told <i>Variety<\/i>. \u201cI think we have to look at it as a tool, and on the production side as a tool. How is it going to be used to help us make movies better for the filmmakers?
