{"id":58982,"date":"2026-01-09T09:40:27","date_gmt":"2026-01-09T02:40:27","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hbbgroup.net\/global-sanctions-fuel-record-flow-to-illicit-crypto-addresses\/"},"modified":"2026-01-09T09:40:27","modified_gmt":"2026-01-09T02:40:27","slug":"global-sanctions-fuel-record-flow-to-illicit-crypto-addresses","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hbbgroup.net\/zh\/global-sanctions-fuel-record-flow-to-illicit-crypto-addresses\/","title":{"rendered":"Global sanctions fuel record flow to illicit crypto addresses"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-testid=\"html-renderer-container\">\n<p>Ongoing sanctions against nation-states last year pushed the total value of crypto received by illicit addresses to its highest in history, as blacklisted entities sought to evade sanctions at scale.<\/p>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\">Throughout 2025, there were \u201cunprecedented volumes associated with nation-states\u2019 on-chain behavior,\u201d blockchain analytics firm Chainalysis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chainalysis.com\/blog\/2026-crypto-crime-report-introduction\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> in their 2026 crypto crime report on Thursday.<\/p>\n<p>Illicit <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/learn\/articles\/active-vs-new-addresses-in-crypto-key-differences-explained\" rel target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/learn\/articles\/active-vs-new-addresses-in-crypto-key-differences-explained\">cryptocurrency addresses received<\/a> at least $154 billion in 2025, a 162% increase year-over-year from 2024\u2019s $59 billion, primarily driven by the value received by sanctioned entities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\">At the same time, Russia, which is facing sanctions due to its invasion of Ukraine, launched <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/eu-sanctions-russian-stablecoin-and-crypto-exchanges\">its ruble-backed A7A5 token<\/a> in February 2025, and transacted over $93.3 billion in less than one year.<\/p>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\">\u201cIn 2025, we tracked a notable rise in nation-state activity in crypto, marking the latest phase in the maturation of the illicit on-chain ecosystem,\u201d the Chainalysis team said.<\/p>\n<figure>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2026-01\/019ba088-d038-7e48-8976-da757203b883.png\" title><figcaption><em>Source: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/chainalysis\/status\/2009244216723910964\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/chainalysis\/status\/2009244216723910964\"><em>Chainalysis<\/em><\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The Global Sanctions Inflation Index <a href=\"https:\/\/www.lseg.com\/en\/insights\/risk-intelligence\/where-are-global-sanctions-heading-in-2025?utm\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">estimated<\/a> in May that there were just under 80,000 total sanctioned entities and persons globally. The Center for a New American Security <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnas.org\/publications\/reports\/sanctions-by-the-numbers-2024-year-in-review?utm_source=chatgpt.com\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">found<\/a> that in 2024, the US alone issued \u201can unprecedented\u201d number of sanctions, with 3,135 entities added to its Specially Designated Nationals and Blocked Persons List.<\/p>\n<h2>Illicit stablecoin usage mirrors legitimate activities<\/h2>\n<p>Just as <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/stablecoins-300-billion-market-cap-47-growth-ytd\">stablecoin volumes have blossomed<\/a> over the past year, a similar trend has emerged in illicit circles, with <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/learn\/articles\/stablecoins-101-what-are-crypto-stablecoins-and-how-do-they-work\" rel target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/learn\/articles\/stablecoins-101-what-are-crypto-stablecoins-and-how-do-they-work\">stablecoins dominating<\/a> illicit transactions, accounting for 84% of all volume, according to Chainalysis.<\/p>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\">\u201cThis mirrors broader ecosystem trends where stablecoins occupy a sizable and growing percentage of all crypto activity due to their practical benefits: easy cross-border transferability, lower volatility, and broader utility,\u201d the Chainalysis team said.<\/p>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\"><em><strong>Related: <\/strong><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/russia-central-bank-easing-crypto-rules-sanctions\"><em><strong>Russia mulls relaxing crypto rules to blunt impact of Western sanctions<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Illicit crypto use remains below 1% of all tx volume<\/h2>\n<p>Chainalysis speculates that as it identifies more illicit addresses, the value received by illicit crypto addresses will likely increase as 2026 unfolds.
