Loke said she had no trading experience, but \u201cEd\u201d guided her through wiring funds into an online account that \u201che\u201d controlled.<\/p>\n<p>According to Loke, Ed showed her an app screenshot that showed her making \u201ca big profit in seconds,\u201d a tactic common in pig-butchering schemes that use fabricated results to convince victims their money is growing.<\/p>\n<p>Pig-butchering scams are long-form cons in which fraudsters build a relationship with a victim over weeks or months before steering them into fake investment platforms and draining their savings.<\/p>\n<p>In August, Meta said it removed over <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/333764\/meta-6-8-million-whatsapp-accounts-pig-butchering\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">6.8 million<\/a> WhatsApp accounts linked to pig butchering scams.<\/p>\n<p>As the scam progressed, Loke said she sent a series of escalating transfers, starting with $15,000, which grew to over $490,000 from her IRA.<\/p>\n<p>She eventually took out a $300,000 second mortgage and wired those funds as well. Altogether, she sent close to $1 million to accounts controlled by the scammers.<\/p>\n<h2 color=\"#333\"><strong>A scam exposed by an unlikely ally<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>When her supposed crypto account suddenly \u201cfroze,\u201d \u201cEd\u201d demanded an additional $1 million to release the funds. Panicked, Loke described the situation to ChatGPT.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;ChatGPT told me: No, this is a scam, you&#8217;d better go to the police station,\u201d she told <i>ABC7<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>The AI responded that the setup matched known scam patterns, prompting her to confront the man she believed she was dating and then contact the police.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators later confirmed she had been routing money to a bank in Malaysia, where it was withdrawn by scammers.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Why am I so stupid. I let him scam me!&#8221; Loke said. &#8220;I was really, really depressed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Loke\u2019s case is the latest example of ChatGPT being used to bust scammers.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, an IT professional in Delhi said he \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/350935\/how-ai-wiz-used-chatgpt-turn-tables-scammer\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">vibe coded<\/a>\u201d a website that allowed him to determine the location and photo of a would-be scammer.<\/p>\n<p>OpenAI did not immediately respond to\u00a0<span><i>Decrypt&#8217;s<\/i> request for comment<\/span>.<\/p>\n<h2 color=\"#333\"><strong>A growing cybercrime trend<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>According to the FBI&#8217;s Internet Crime Complaint Center (IC3), <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/316090\/elderly-americans-hit-hardest-by-9-3b-crypto-scam-wave-in-2024-fbi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">$9.3 billion<\/a> was lost to online scams targeting American senior citizens in 2024.<\/p>\n<p>Many of these scams originated from <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/347434\/eu-arrests-nine-in-connection-with-689m-crypto-scam-network\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Europe<\/a> or <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/350295\/interpol-scam-compound-network-global-threat-crypto-fraud\" target=\"_blank\">compounds<\/a> in Southeast Asia, where large groups of scammers target international victims. In September, the US Treasury <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/338644\/us-treasury-sanctions-19-southeast-asian-entities-in-10b-cyber-scam-crackdown\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sanctioned<\/a> 19 entities across Burma and Cambodia that it says scammed Americans.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Southeast Asia&#8217;s cyber scam industry not only threatens the well-being and financial security of Americans, but also subjects thousands of people to modern slavery,&#8221; John K.
