{"id":56777,"date":"2025-12-08T10:15:46","date_gmt":"2025-12-08T03:15:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hbbgroup.net\/zksync-to-retire-its-original-ethereum-rollup-next-year\/"},"modified":"2025-12-08T10:15:46","modified_gmt":"2025-12-08T03:15:46","slug":"zksync-to-retire-its-original-ethereum-rollup-next-year","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hbbgroup.net\/zh\/zksync-to-retire-its-original-ethereum-rollup-next-year\/","title":{"rendered":"ZKsync to Retire Its Original Ethereum Rollup Next Year"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<h4 color=\"#333\">In brief<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>ZKsync has announced plans to deprecate its Lite network in 2026 as part of a long-signaled transition.<\/li>\n<li>Remaining funds on Lite total about $50 million, based on L2BEAT\u2019s latest figures.<\/li>\n<li>Engineers expect all future development to center on zkEVM systems and ZK Stack deployments.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>ZKsync, an Ethereum scaling solution made by Matter Labs, said Sunday that it plans to retire ZKsync Lite, the network it launched in June 2020 as Ethereum\u2019s early zero-knowledge payment rollup, next year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis is a planned, orderly sunset for a system that has served its purpose and does not affect any other ZKsync systems,\u201d the team <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/zksync\/status\/1997776803302125607?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener\"><span>wrote<\/span><\/a><span> on X.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>They added that ZKsync Lite was a \u201cproof-of-concept\u201d and \u201cvalidated critical ideas\u201d in the context of Matter Labs&#8217; rollout of production versions of its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/zero-knowledge-proofs-explained-learn-guide\" target=\"_blank\"><span>zero-knowledge<\/span><\/a><span> systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<div><a href=\"https:\/\/aleo.org\/solutions\/?utm_source=decrypt&#038;utm_medium=native_placement&#038;utm_campaign=sero_affiliate_program\" rel=\"nofollow noreferrer\" target=\"_blank\"><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" alt width=\"970\" height=\"250\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/img.decrypt.co\/insecure\/rs:fit:3840:0:0:0\/plain\/https:\/\/cdn.decrypt.co\/wp-content\/themes\/decrypt-media\/assets\/images\/aleo\/desktop.png@webp\"><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" alt width=\"300\" height=\"250\" decoding=\"async\" data-nimg=\"1\" src=\"https:\/\/img.decrypt.co\/insecure\/rs:fit:3840:0:0:0\/plain\/https:\/\/cdn.decrypt.co\/wp-content\/themes\/decrypt-media\/assets\/images\/aleo\/mobile.png@webp\"><\/p>\n<p><\/a><\/div>\n<p><span>Those early developments later helped build out the systems that now underpin ZKsync Era and the ZK Stack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cIt did its job: prove what\u2019s possible and pave the way for the next generation,\u201d the team wrote.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The announcement formalizes a shift that began when Matter Labs <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.matter-labs.io\/all-aboard-zksync-era-mainnet-8b8964ba7c59\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener\"><span>rebranded<\/span><\/a><span> ZKsync 1.0 to ZKsync Lite in February 2023. A month later, the lab ceased actively updating its engineering work for ZKsync Lite and moved its team to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/124477\/ethereum-scaling-solution-zksync-launches-alpha-mainnet\" target=\"_blank\"><span>ZKsync Era<\/span><\/a><span> and its broader ZK Stack.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>At the time, Matter Labs&#8217; head of engineering, Anthony Rose, told <\/span><i><span>Decrypt<\/span><\/i><span> that ZKsync Era would \u201cdefinitely be an alpha version of the system,\u201d acknowledging that they were not claiming it already was \u201cthe system that [we] expect it to be.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Rose then projected roughly \u201ctwo or three years\u201d of \u201cmore engineering work to do\u201d and confirmed that ZKSync Era would form the \u201ccore skeleton\u201d of Matter Lab\u2019s zkEVM ecosystem.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Lite was built as a lightweight system for transfers, NFT minting, and basic swaps. However, it did not support <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/smart-contracts\" target=\"_blank\"><span>smart contracts<\/span><\/a><span>, a factor that limited its long-term usefulness once general-purpose <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-is-zkevm\" target=\"_blank\"><span>zkEVM designs<\/span><\/a><span> emerged.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>When Era went live in 2023 with full <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/ethereum-virtual-machine\" target=\"_blank\"><span>EVM compatibility<\/span><\/a><span>, developers began consolidating liquidity and tooling around the newer stack. Wallets and decentralized apps then phased Lite out of their interfaces, reducing active usage to fewer than 200 daily operations this month, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/l2beat.com\/scaling\/projects\/zksync-lite\" target=\"_blank\"><span>data<\/span><\/a><span> from L2Beat.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Lite still holds roughly $49 million in value through its canonically bridged assets, which remain withdrawable to Ethereum through the network\u2019s L1 contract.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>ZKsync <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/zksync\/status\/1997776807148322857?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener\"><span>confirmed<\/span><\/a><span> that withdrawals to Ethereum &#8220;will keep working&#8221; throughout the deprecation process and committed to publishing timelines and instructions in the coming year.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The announcement comes just over a year after Matter Labs <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/247615\/zksync-maker-matter-labs-layoffs-ethereum-scaling-crowded\" target=\"_blank\"><span>revealed layoffs<\/span><\/a><span> in September of last year, impacting 24 employees, as confirmed with <\/span><i><span>Decrypt<\/span><\/i><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>At the time, Matter Labs CEO Alex Gluchowski <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/gluk64\/status\/1830968752210375030?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> the layoffs were done in the context of a \u201cbig increase in demand for ZK Chains.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span>Decrypt<\/span><\/i><span> has reached out to Matter Labs and the Ethereum Foundation for further comment.<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<h3>Daily Debrief Newsletter<\/h3>\n<p>Start every day with the top news stories right now, plus original features, a podcast, videos and more.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In brief ZKsync has announced plans to deprecate its Lite network in 2026 as part of a long-signaled transition.
