{"id":56715,"date":"2025-12-08T10:15:48","date_gmt":"2025-12-08T03:15:48","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hbbgroup.net\/vitalik-buterin-floats-gas-futures-on-ethereum-to-hedge-fee-spikes\/"},"modified":"2025-12-08T10:15:48","modified_gmt":"2025-12-08T03:15:48","slug":"vitalik-buterin-floats-gas-futures-on-ethereum-to-hedge-fee-spikes","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hbbgroup.net\/zh\/vitalik-buterin-floats-gas-futures-on-ethereum-to-hedge-fee-spikes\/","title":{"rendered":"Vitalik Buterin floats gas futures on Ethereum to hedge fee spikes"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-v-ae253174>\n<p>Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has floated the idea for an onchain futures market for gas, which could give users certainty over transaction fees as the network becomes more widely adopted. <\/p>\n<p>In a post on X on Saturday, Buterin <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/vitalikbuterin\/status\/1997279838252531823\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">argued<\/a> that the market needs a \u201cgood trustless onchain gas futures market,\u201d as people have been questioning him over the certainty of low gas fees via current price reduction methods in <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/explained\/how-the-fusaka-upgrade-fits-into-ethereum-s-long-term-roadmap\">Ethereum\u2019s roadmap<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\">Buterin outlined that one way to address the uncertainty would be to enable users to essentially lock in prices for specific times in the future, as he outlined one potential market for Ethereum Base fees \u2014 a crucial factor in the overall gas fees.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>How an Ethereum gas futures market would work<\/h2>\n<p>In a traditional futures market, contracts are offered to buy or sell assets, such as oil, at a set price in the future, enabling investors to speculate on price changes and producers to hedge against future risks.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In an Ethereum context, the futures market would essentially do the same, offer gas fees at set prices at future time windows, allowing users of the network to potentially save on future price spikes if they occur.<\/p>\n<figure>    <img decoding=\"async\" alt src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2025-12\/019afbd5-e52d-7e16-959b-f2ff577dc71f\" title><figcaption><em>Source: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/vitalikbuterin\/status\/1997279838252531823\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"https:\/\/x.com\/vitalikbuterin\/status\/1997279838252531823\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/vitalikbuterin\/status\/1997279838252531823\"><em>Vitalik Buterin<\/em><\/a><em>   <\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>As such, a well-established and reliable futures market would provide a key metric for the ecosystem to speculate, plan or build around.<\/p>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\">\u201cAn onchain gas futures market would help solve this: people would get a clear signal of people\u2019s expectations of future gas fees, and would even be able to hedge against future gas prices, effectively prepaying for any specific quantity of gas in a specific time interval,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\">A functional prediction market such as this would provide an essential service for users with heavy volume on the network, such as traders, builders, applications and institutions, who require a level of certainty for projecting operation costs.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><template data-ct-widget=\"buzzsprout\" data-buzzsprout-podcast-id=\"2040516\" data-buzzsprout-episode-id=\"18304599\"><\/template><\/p>\n<h2>Ethereum gas fees have fallen throughout 2025<\/h2>\n<p>The idea from Buterin comes at when Ethereum\u2019s average gas fees for basic transactions are sitting at around 0.474 gwei, or $0.01 at the time of writing, according to data from Etherscan.<\/p>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\"><em><strong>Related: <\/strong><\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/ether-exchange-balance-falls-to-an-unprecedented-low\"><em><strong>Ether supply squeeze looms with exchanges holding lowest levels since 2015<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\">However, for more complex transactions such as token swaps, NFT sales and bridging assets, the average costs are sitting at around $0.16, $0.27 and $0.05.<\/p>\n<p>While Ethereum transaction fees have continued to decline in 2025, the average costs across all types of transactions have seen many spikes and crashes.
