{"id":56581,"date":"2025-12-03T11:26:06","date_gmt":"2025-12-03T04:26:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hbbgroup.net\/crypto-lobby-slams-abcs-sensational-bitcoin-article-in-complaint\/"},"modified":"2025-12-03T11:26:06","modified_gmt":"2025-12-03T04:26:06","slug":"crypto-lobby-slams-abcs-sensational-bitcoin-article-in-complaint","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hbbgroup.net\/zh\/crypto-lobby-slams-abcs-sensational-bitcoin-article-in-complaint\/","title":{"rendered":"Crypto lobby slams ABC\u2019s \u2018sensational\u2019 Bitcoin article in complaint"},"content":{"rendered":"<div data-v-3fc0e2b0>\n<p>A crypto industry group has filed a formal complaint against the Australian Broadcasting Corporation, seeking to correct a recent article that contained several misrepresentations and factual errors about Bitcoin.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>In its complaint, the Australian Bitcoin Industry Body claimed that the article <a href=\"https:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/2025-12-02\/bitcoin-losing-to-tether-as-money-launderers-currency-of-choice\/106086594\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">painted<\/a> Bitcoin (<a href=\"http:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/bitcoin-price\">BTC<\/a>) as a volatile tool for criminals while <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/hijacking-american-dream-bitcoin-everyone\" rel target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/hijacking-american-dream-bitcoin-everyone\">ignoring the benefits of Bitcoin<\/a> for energy grids and humanitarian purposes.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\">\u201cThe article misrepresented Bitcoin\u2019s purpose, conflated it with criminal activity, omitted long-standing publicly available information, and relied on sensational language rather than evidence to inform readers,\u201d ABIB alleges.\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cIt ignored well-documented global and local use cases\u2026 [and] effectively reduced its coverage to outdated &#038; misleading tropes, and narratives on price swings and US politics.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\">The ABIB <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AusBTCIndBody\/status\/1995703656491172139\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> on X that the \u201cone-sided framing\u201d breached the broadcaster\u2019s editorial policies and code of conduct. Its complaint outlines which sections of the article it wants corrected and which editorial policy has been breached. Under its code of practice, the ABC has 60 days to respond to the complaint.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The ABC is the country\u2019s national public broadcaster, funded by the Australian federal government, and administered by a government-appointed board of directors. Its monthly readership was estimated to be over 12 million in October, <a href=\"https:\/\/iris-au.ipsos.com\/rankings\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/iris-au.ipsos.com\/rankings\/\">according<\/a> to the digital audience\u2011measurement system, Ipsos Iris.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\">ABC told Cointelegraph it was not aware of the complaint at this time.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2025-12\/019ae206-5ca0-7d05-bf9f-1d610e6d0cc8\" title><figcaption><em>Source: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AusBTCIndBody\/status\/1995703656491172139\" rel=\"nofollow\" target=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AusBTCIndBody\/status\/1995703656491172139\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/AusBTCIndBody\/status\/1995703656491172139\"><em>Australian Bitcoin Industry Body<\/em><\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>In the event the broadcaster doesn\u2019t respond, or the ABIB is dissatisfied with the remedy, the matter can be <a href=\"https:\/\/www.transparency.gov.au\/publications\/communications-and-the-arts\/australian-broadcasting-corporation\/australian-broadcasting-corporation-annual-report-2018-19\/appendices\/appendix-4---abc-code-of-practice-(%26-associated-standards)-\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">escalated<\/a> to the Australian Communications and Media Authority, which has the option to open an investigation, and if a breach is found, take enforcement actions, such as a warning, infringement notice or make a licensing decision.\u00a0<\/p>\n<h2>Only 0.14% of onchain txs are criminal<\/h2>\n<p>The ABC article, published on Tuesday, portrayed Bitcoin as a valuable tool for criminals, <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/criminals-cash-over-crypto-money-laundering\" rel target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/criminals-cash-over-crypto-money-laundering\">despite fiat currency still being more frequently used<\/a> for illicit activities.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\">\u201cWhile Bitcoin remains on the radar as a useful tool for those operating in the shadows \u2014 including crime gangs dealing drugs or weapons and shady governments needing to shift reserves \u2014 this role has been usurped by stablecoins, particularly one known as Tether,\u201d the article stated.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A January report from blockchain data platform Chainalysis proves this wrong. It <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chainalysis.com\/blog\/2025-crypto-crime-report-introduction\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">found<\/a> that just 0.14% of <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/learn\/articles\/on-chain-vs-off-chain-transactions\" rel target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/learn\/articles\/on-chain-vs-off-chain-transactions\">total onchain transaction volume<\/a> was connected to possible criminal activity in 2024. adoption of Bitcoin and cryptocurrencies has accelerated over the last two years through <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/bitcoin-etf-inflows-post-crash-rebound\" rel target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/bitcoin-etf-inflows-post-crash-rebound\">investment vehicles such as exchange-traded funds<\/a> and digital asset treasuries.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\">BitBo <a href=\"https:\/\/bitbo.io\/treasuries\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">estimates<\/a> publicly traded and private companies, ETFs and countries hold over 3.7 million Bitcoin, worth over $341 billion.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><template data-ct-widget=\"buzzsprout\" data-buzzsprout-podcast-id=\"2040516\" data-buzzsprout-episode-id=\"18230177\"><\/template><\/p>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\">At the same time, banks and investment managers, <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/nordic-bank-nordea-to-soon-list-bitcoin-etp\">even those who were once skeptical<\/a>, have begun to make slow advances in the space.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\">On Monday, Vanguard, the world\u2019s second-largest asset manager, <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/vanguard-to-allow-clients-trade-crypto-etfs\">announced that it would start allowing its clients<\/a> to trade crypto ETFs on its platform, reversing its previous stance.<\/p>\n<h2>Crypto misinformation is a problem in MSM, says lobby<\/h2>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\">Market intelligence firm Perception <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/bitcoin-lacked-coverage-mass-media-q2-report\">released a July report on mainstream media coverage<\/a> on crypto in Q2, and found that 31% of the articles published by the 18 outlets it observed for the study were positive, 41% were neutral, and 28% were negative.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\"><em><strong>Related: <\/strong><\/em><a Australian media, particularly from publicly funded institutions.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\">\u201cBitcoin deserves informed, responsible coverage, not dismissal through
