This potential tightening \u2014 Japan\u2019s first since January \u2014 has amplified concerns about <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/japan-10-year-government-bond-yield-jumps-highest-level-since-2008\">unwinding the massive yen carry trade<\/a>, pressuring risk assets such as cryptocurrencies.<\/p>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\">\u201c\u200b\u200b$BTC dumped cause BOJ put Dec rate hike in play,\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/CryptoHayes\/status\/1995368658940612945?s=20\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> BitMEX co-founder Arthur Hayes in an X post on Monday, adding that a USD\/JPY rate of between 155 and 160 \u201cmakes BOJ hawkish.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2025-12\/019ad8e0-ca8a-70c7-ba6d-5b0d4f0729c8\" title><figcaption><em>BTC\/JPY chart. The yen is also surging, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/nicrypto\/status\/1995339128653943174?s=20\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> co-founder and CEO of Coinbureau Nic in his latest post on X.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>As a result, \u201cbond investors place a 76% chance of a BoJ rate hike on Dec. 19,\u201d Nic wrote, adding:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAn increase in Japanese base rates and strengthening of Yen leads to an unwind of the carry trade (borrowing in Yen, buying risk assets). \u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2025-12\/019ad8e0-ce9d-77a2-8f58-eae3e60a7a95\" title><figcaption><em>Japanese two-year yields. Polymarket bettors now <a href=\"https:\/\/polymarket.com\/event\/bank-of-japan-decision-in-december?tid=1764571447358\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">project a 52% chance of a 25 bps increase<\/a> at the Dec. 19 meeting.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>A stronger yen from higher rates makes carry trades costlier, prompting investors to unwind positions en masse. This forces the sale of risk assets, as seen in August 2024, when a surprise BOJ hike triggered a 20% BTC price crash to $49,000 and $1.7 billion in liquidations.<\/p>\n<h2>How low can Bitcoin price go?<\/h2>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\">The Bitcoin liquidation heatmap showed the price eating away liquidity around $86,000, with millions in bid orders still sitting between the spot price and $79,600<\/p>\n<figure>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2025-12\/019ad8e0-dbe4-7f79-a6d2-af6d6b1df8f7\" title><figcaption><em>BTC\/USDT liquidation heatmap. Source: CoinGlass<\/em><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>This suggests that Bitcoin\u2019s price might drop further to sweep this liquidity before staging any recovery.<\/p>\n<p>From a technical perspective, the price has validated a bear flag on the daily chart after dropping below the lower boundary of the flag at $90,300 on Monday.<\/p>\n<p>A daily candlestick close below this level would confirm the continuation of the downtrend toward the measured target of the flag at $67,700 (near 2021 all-time highs).
