Bitcoiners aren\u2019t new to 30% drawdowns, but it could be a first for many Wall Street investors, said crypto commentator Anthony Pompliano. <\/p>\n

Institutional investors new to crypto may have been caught off guard by Bitcoin’s volatility, and has put downward pressure on its price, according to crypto entrepreneur and investor Anthony Pompliano.<\/p>\n

During an interview on CNBC\u2019s Squawk Box on Monday, Pompliano said<\/a> Bitcoin (BTC<\/a>) draws down roughly once every 1.5 years, and the recent slump isn\u2019t likely to surprise Bitcoiners who have been in the game<\/a> for a long time.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cOver the last decade, Bitcoin has drawn down 30% or more 21 different times,\u201d said Pompliano.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cSo Bitcoiners are used to this. Now, who\u2019s not used to this are the people who are coming from Wall Street. They\u2019re not used to this type of volatility.\u201d\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cThese new people are very, very fearful. We\u2019re going into end of year. There\u2019s things around bonuses people are trying to figure out, should I actually sell this asset that I thought I was really excited about? And I think that\u2019s putting some downward pressure on the price,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Bitcoin sell-off was mostly US-based\u00a0<\/h2>\n

Matthew Sigel, head of digital assets research at investment manager VanEck, said<\/a> on Monday that Bitcoin’s recent sell-off, which saw the token drop to lows<\/a> of around $82,000, was \u201coverwhelmingly a US-session phenomenon.\u201d<\/p>\n

He pointed to tightening US liquidity and widening credit spreads as key drivers, as fears over the large\u2011scale capital expenditures tied to artificial intelligence collided with a more fragile funding market.<\/p>\n

Crypto volatility helps push the price higher\u00a0\u00a0<\/h2>\n

Bitcoin\u2019s price volatility has surged over the last two months and was creeping back up to about 60 as of Monday<\/a>, which can spark large market moves in both directions, according to Bitwise market analyst Jeff Park.<\/p>\n

Pompliano told CNBC that people who have been involved in crypto for a while understand that volatility is a strong indicator.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cIt\u2019s not a negative. I would be worried if Bitcoin’s volatility essentially was zero. You need volatility for the asset to go up.\u201d\u00a0<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

\u201cYou know Bitcoin is up 240x over the last decade. It\u2019s about a 70% compound annual growth rate. We are not going to continue to have that level of growth moving forward,\u201d he said.\u00a0<\/p>\n
