The comet made its closest approach to the sun on October 30, but Earth was on the far side of its orbit at the time, limiting what ground-based telescopes could see.<\/p>\n<h2 color=\"#333\"><strong>Online theories grow<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Still, NASA\u2019s explanation did little to ease doubts among online audiences who had spent weeks developing alternative theories.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMaybe if he says comet 300 more times, everyone will believe the psyop,\u201d a viewer wrote.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe public is not blind anymore. We remember the docs during Covid repeating lies with a straight face just like this,\u201d another said. \u201cMust be a big paycheck to sit there and give us this INSULTING explanation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The mockeries and conspiracy theories continued on social media.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo, you can&#8217;t have managed to get worse footage than amateurs with such a big budget,\u201d an X user <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/LaikCumhuriyett\/status\/1991248958878871610?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow external\">wrote<\/a>. \u201cYou should stop making fun of people because the masses have woken up and want to know the truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Others pointed to the comet\u2019s appearance in images, arguing it looked unlike typical comets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c3I\/ATLAS is now behaving in a bizarre, weird way. (1) A large glowing halo extending out to half a million kilometers,\u201d another <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/IntuitMachine\/status\/1987155418502815932?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener nofollow external\">wrote<\/a>. \u201c(2) At least 7 distinct jets, some of which are anti-tails in the sunward direction. All bets are off right now on what the hell it is!\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the press conference, viewers also called out the quality of NASA\u2019s images, which became a focal point for skeptics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo you want us to believe this below is a photograph of the Eagle Nebula captured by the James Webb Space Telescope seven thousand light-years away,\u201d another X user wrote. \u201cBut this blurry crap is the best you can offer of 3I\/ATLAS, which is only 0.0000287 light-years away? NASA is a joke.\u201d<\/p>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">That\u2019s embarrassing when half the amateur astrophotographers are getting better pics with inferior equipment welcome to the clown show.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 UAP Sentinel (@UAPSentinel) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/UAPSentinel\/status\/1991245498515075291?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">November 19, 2025<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p>Nicky Fox, Associate Administrator for NASA\u2019s Science Mission Directorate, said 3I Atlas was a small body made of rock, ice, and dust. As it warmed, the ice released vapor that created the surrounding coma. She said the comet already showed differences from objects that formed in this solar system, though she did not specify what those differences were.<\/p>\n<p>Shawn Domagal-Goldman, Director for NASA\u2019s astrophysics division, said the ratio of carbon dioxide to water in 3I Atlas was higher than usual for local comets, but said there were several natural explanations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor one, the carbon dioxide is going to bake off that comet earlier when it&#8217;s far away, but there are other well-understood processes that could explain it,\u201d he said, noting that the ratios of carbon dioxide to water often differ in objects beyond our solar system\u2014whether in stars or planets\u2014and that 3I Atlas showed the same pattern.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo it could mean\u2014and this is the last theory for why those ratios could differ \u2014that these ices were exposed to higher levels of radiation than comets in our system,\u201d he said. \u201cOr, it could be that the comet formed in a region where carbon dioxide ice was more abundant and unlike our solar system.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Tom Statler, lead scientist for small bodies in NASA\u2019s planetary science division, addressed the challenges of capturing images of 3I Atlas.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cRemember, space is big. Nothing is ever as close as you\u2019d like, and these observations are very difficult,\u201d Statler said. \u201cIt\u2019s as if our NASA spacecraft were at a baseball game, watching from different places in the stadium.
