It refers to malicious nodes, groups of nodes,<a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/bots-against-humanity\" title=\"null\"> or botnets<\/a> that have the potential to calculate and match IP addresses to transactions conducted on the network.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>The changes focus on using an improved peer selection algorithm that avoids connecting to the large subnets of IP addresses favored by \u201cspy nodes,\u201d with users instead pushed to connect to what are deemed safer nodes. The update also includes some general reliability and stability fixes.<\/p>\n<h2><strong>Monero privacy threats\u00a0<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>Fluorine Fermi provides another tool for users to protect their privacy.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Given that spy nodes threaten the privacy of users in contrast to the <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/learn\/articles\/what-is-monero-xmr\" title=\"null\">main aim of the project<\/a>, the community has worked hard to find workarounds, <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/docs.getmonero.org\/infrastructure\/networks\/#block-explorers-self-hosted\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"null\">establish<\/a> safety practices, promote self-node operation and utilize software to provide a shield against <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/arxiv.org\/html\/2509.10214v1\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"null\">malicious<\/a> nodes on Monero.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Related: <\/strong><\/em><a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/privacy-constant-battle-blockchain-state\" title=\"null\"><em><strong>Privacy is \u2018constant battle\u2019 between blockchain stakeholders and state<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<div>\n<p>One such idea, <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/Monero\/comments\/1hc1ozf\/mrl_recommendation_ban_spy_node_ip_addresses_from\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"null\">proposed<\/a> by the Monero Research Lab in late 2024, is to enable node operators to create a ban list of all IP addresses suspected of being spy nodes, thereby avoiding connections to them. <\/p>\n<p>However, this is not seen as a foolproof or fully sustainable tactic, as malicious node operators could just go on and set up new spy IP addresses if they need to.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p><template data-ct-widget=\"buzzsprout\" data-buzzsprout-podcast-id=\"2040516\" data-buzzsprout-episode-id=\"17907885\"><\/template><\/p>\n<p>Another tool the community promotes is the use of Dandelion++, software designed to prevent malicious actors from linking IP addresses to transactions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Monero privacy issues were, in part, brought into the spotlight via a <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/chainalysis-leak-monero-traceability\" title=\"null\">leaked Chainalysis video<\/a> that appeared in September 2024.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Cointelegraph was supplied with the video by an anonymous source, which claimed that Chainalysis was able to track transactions back to 2021 via its own \u201cmalicious\u201d Monero nodes.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Headline: <\/strong><\/em><a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/magazine\/help-smart-home-devices-hacked-steal-crypto-bitcoin-cybersecurity\/\" title=\"null\"><em><strong>\u2018Help!
