But ahead of being formally sworn in, the commander in chief <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/301691\/donald-trump-drops-solana-meme-coin\" target=\"_blank\">dropped<\/a> a <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-are-meme-coins-and-tokens\" target=\"_blank\">meme coin<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Yes, you read that right. Running on the <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-is-solana-a-scalable-decentralized-network-for-dapps\" target=\"_blank\">Solana<\/a> network, the <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-is-trump-donald-trumps-official-solana-meme-coin\" target=\"_blank\">TRUMP token<\/a> at one point had a market cap of $14 billion. It\u2019s since plunged to $1.5 billion, but the move signaled the new President\u2019s growing enthusiasm for the digital asset space after campaigning to help Bitcoiners and the fast-moving sphere as a whole.<\/p>\n<p><span>Trump branded himself as a crypto-friendly candidate ahead of November\u2019s divisive election, bringing in millions of dollars in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/239952\/trump-super-pac-gets-millions-from-crypto-backers\" target=\"_blank\"><span>cash<\/span><\/a><span> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/240063\/everyday-users-1-percent-trump-crypto-donations\" target=\"_blank\"><span>digital asset donations<\/span><\/a><span> from Silicon Valley tech leaders. And then he won.<br \/><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But it wasn\u2019t always like this: President Trump was once a staunch crypto critic. So how did we get here?<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">I am not a fan of Bitcoin and other Cryptocurrencies, which are not money, and whose value is highly volatile and based on thin air. Trump (@realDonaldTrump) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/1149472282584072192?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">July 12, 2019<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>Trump\u2019s most defining early comment on cryptocurrency dates back to 2019, when as president he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/7848\/donald-trump-blasts-bitcoin-facebooks-libra-twitter-tirade\" target=\"_blank\"><span>made it clear<\/span><\/a><span> he didn\u2019t like Bitcoin.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI am not a fan of Bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies, which are not money, and whose value is highly volatile and based on thin air,\u201d he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/realDonaldTrump\/status\/1149472282584072192?lang=en\" target=\"_blank\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> on Twitter at the time, before slamming <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/25892\/facebook-libra-was-always-destined-to-fail\" target=\"_blank\"><span>Facebook\u2019s plans<\/span><\/a><span> for a digital currency.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe have only one real currency in the USA, and it is stronger than ever, both dependable and reliable,\u201d he added. \u201cIt is by far the most dominant currency anywhere in the world, and it will always stay that way. It is called the United States dollar!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Trump <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/72939\/bitcoin-seems-like-scam-former-us-president-donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\"><span>reiterated<\/span><\/a><span> his beliefs during a Bitcoin bull run in 2021. \u201cBitcoin just seems like a scam,\u201d he said on <\/span><i><span>Fox Business<\/span><\/i><span>, repeating that he wanted the dollar to be the world\u2019s top currency.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 color=\"#333\">Entering the NFT world<\/h2>\n<p><span>It took a long time for him to explicitly say he liked the top cryptocurrency, and the journey started with an unlikely crypto craze: <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/non-fungible-tokens-nfts-explained-guide-learn-blockchain\" target=\"_blank\"><span>NFT<\/span><\/a> collectibles<span>.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>By the end of 2021, after Trump had left the White House, his wife Melania <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/MELANIATRUMP\/status\/1471468919810670603\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener\"><span>announced<\/span><\/a><span> her plans for a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-is-solana-a-scalable-decentralized-network-for-dapps\" target=\"_blank\"><span>Solana<\/span><\/a><span>-based NFT collection.\u00a0<\/span><span>Solana Labs <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/88551\/solana-labs-distances-itself-melania-trump-nft\" target=\"_blank\"><span>clarified<\/span><\/a><span> that it had nothing to do with the collection launching on the blockchain, and Trump continued to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/89108\/donald-trump-calls-crypto-dangerous-even-as-melania-launches-nft\" target=\"_blank\"><span>slam crypto<\/span><\/a><span> as \u201cdangerous\u201d despite his wife\u2019s venture.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The next year, however, the commander-in-chief launched his own NFT collection. Minted on <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-is-ethereum-quickly-explained-four-minute-guide\" target=\"_blank\">Ethereum<\/a> scaling network <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-is-polygon-matic-and-why-it-matters-for-ethereum\" target=\"_blank\"><span>Polygon<\/span><\/a><span>, the digital trading card collection was at first <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/117317\/donald-trump-nft-collection-crypto-cant-even\" target=\"_blank\"><span>ridiculed<\/span><\/a><span>\u2014but it still sold out quickly and made millions of dollars.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Trump later <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/117970\/donald-trump-nfts-sort-of-cute-art-not-investment\" target=\"_blank\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> that he only launched the collection because he thought they were \u201csort of cute.\u201d He has since <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/209514\/donald-trump-selling-more-nfts-original-sets-crashing-again\" target=\"_blank\"><span>launched<\/span><\/a><span> more collections on Polygon, and even minted some of the third set on <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-is-bitcoin-four-minute-instant-guide-explainer\" target=\"_blank\">Bitcoin<\/a> via the <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-are-ordinals-a-beginners-guide-to-bitcoin-nfts\/\" target=\"_blank\">Ordinals<\/a> protocol. A fourth collection <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/246618\/trump-nft-collection-holding-bitcoin-dancing\" target=\"_blank\">launched in August 2024<\/a> with the largest number of NFTs to date, though less than 10% of the available total was <a href=\"https:\/\/opensea.io\/collection\/trump-digital-trading-cards-america-first-edition\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener\">ultimately minted<\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Trump has even claimed that the success of his NFT collections, and the surprising number of buyers who used cryptocurrency rather than fiat currency, helped <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/249755\/trump-credits-nfts-change-of-heart-bitcoin-crypto\" target=\"_blank\">change his perspective<\/a> on Bitcoin and cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n<p><span>A digital wallet tied to the President by blockchain analytics firm Arkham Intelligence shows that he has <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/platform.arkhamintelligence.com\/explorer\/entity\/donald-trump\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener\"><span>raked in millions<\/span><\/a><span> in royalties from the NFTs\u2014and also holds some of the biggest unofficial Trump meme coins, which likely were sent to the wallet without Trump&#8217;s knowledge or consent.<\/span><\/p>\n<h2 color=\"#333\"><strong>Trump&#8217;s crypto embrace<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p><span>But it was just last year when Trump really upped the pro-crypto talk. \u201cI make money with it, I have fun with it too,\u201d Trump <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/221174\/trump-says-fun-bitcoin-crazy-new-currencies\" target=\"_blank\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> in a March 2024 interview with CNBC\u2019s <\/span><i><span>Squawk Box<\/span><\/i><span>. \u201cCrazy new currencies, that\u2019s what I call them.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Then, while hosting holders of his NFTs at his Mar-a-Lago resort in May 2024, he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/230023\/trump-supports-crypto-at-nft-event-boden-meme-coin\" target=\"_blank\"><span>told<\/span><\/a><span> the crowd he was \u201cgood with\u201d crypto\u2014and slammed Biden and the Democrats for being \u201cagainst it.\u201d Many saw the event as a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/232738\/he-went-viral-asking-trump-question-save-crypto-in-us\" target=\"_blank\"><span>turning point<\/span><\/a><span> in crypto policy conversations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Rumors <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/233063\/elon-musk-donald-trump-crypto\" target=\"_blank\"><span>spread<\/span><\/a><span> that month that the world\u2019s richest man and biggest donor to the Trump campaign, Elon Musk, had been advising the presidential hopeful on a crypto strategy. (Musk denied the reports.) That July, the Republican party issued a draft party platform that <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/238907\/trump-pledges-protect-bitcoin-un-american-crackdown\" target=\"_blank\">explicitly mentioned crypto<\/a>\u2014a first for the industry.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>After <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/239692\/bitcoin-price-climbs-trump-meme-coins-surge-trump-attacked\" target=\"_blank\"><span>surviving an assassination<\/span><\/a><span> attempt, the business mogul and former reality TV star earned Musk\u2019s public endorsement, as well as support from many other prominent names in the digital asset space. And major crypto figures like the <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/236372\/winklevoss-twins-donate-2-million-bitcoin-trump\" target=\"_blank\">Winklevoss twins of Gemini<\/a> and Kraken founder Jesse Powell donated sizable sums to Trump.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Trump then selected Senator J.D. Vance as his pick for running mate, with the Vice President seen at the time as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/239883\/is-trump-vp-pick-jd-vance-good-crypto\" target=\"_blank\"><span>a pro-crypto candidate<\/span><\/a><span> who previously disclosed Bitcoin holdings of between $100,000 and $250,000 back in 2021.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But the most tangible sign of Trump\u2019s growing embrace of crypto came when he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/242027\/never-sell-your-bitcoin-trump-us-strategic-stockpile\" target=\"_blank\"><span>spoke<\/span><\/a><span> at the 2024 Bitcoin Conference in Nashville, Tennessee. There, he promised the crowd that he would build a \u201cstrategic Bitcoin stockpile\u201d for the country and that his plan was to turn the U.S. into the \u201ccrypto capital of the planet.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The Trump family then teased a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/defi-ultimate-beginners-guide-decentralized-finance\" target=\"_blank\"><span>decentralized finance (DeFi)<\/span><\/a><span> project dubbed World Liberty Financial, with Trump himself posting multiple social media teasers during the initial rollout.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The President\u2019s son Donald Jr. said that the crypto platform will be egalitarian. \u201cFor too long, the average American has been squeezed by the big banks and financial elites. It&#8217;s time we take a stand\u2014together,\u201d he <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/DonaldJTrumpJr\/status\/1826598601897742600\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener\"><span>said<\/span><\/a><span> on Twitter (aka X).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Then, a day after the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/trump-assassination-attempt-what-to-know-564c56e167c3cdc6c50f6a2e91db9a6c\" target=\"_blank\"><span>second attempt<\/span><\/a><span> on his life, Trump <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/249749\/donald-trump-launches-world-liberty-financial-project-token-details\" target=\"_blank\"><span>launched<\/span><\/a><span> the project during a live interview with Rug Radio (<\/span><i><span>Decrypt<\/span><\/i><span>\u2019s sister company). World Liberty Financial<\/span><span> aims to offer borrowing and lending services for cryptocurrencies on Ethereum\u2019s network.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>As crypto token launches go, the project was a bit of a flop right out of the gate, only managing to sell 4% of its allotted tokens during its <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/286650\/lackluster-trump-token-sale\" target=\"_blank\">launch<\/a>. But sales ticked up substantially ahead of Trump&#8217;s inauguration, with the rest of the allotment selling out on January 20\u2014the day he returned to the White House. <i>Decrypt <\/i>then <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/311362\/trump-world-liberty-financial-stablecoin-ethereum-bnb\" target=\"_blank\">reported<\/a> that the World Liberty Financial project had launched its own stablecoin.<\/p>\n<p>The Republican also has more crypto people on his team. Bitcoin bull Robert F. Kennedy Jr. <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/246707\/bitcoin-bull-rfk-jr-joins-trumps-transition-team-after-suspending-campaign\" target=\"_blank\">suspended<\/a> his campaign to endorse Trump, and then joined Trump\u2019s transition team. Now he&#8217;s the Secretary of Health and Human Services. <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/245087\/trump-taps-bitcoin-tether-bull-howard-lutnick-transition-team\" target=\"_blank\">Orange-pilled Cantor Fitzgerald CEO<\/a> Howard Lutnick is also part of Trump\u2019s political squad, now serving as Secretary of Commerce.<\/p>\n<p>Elsewhere, <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/291361\/elon-musk-dogecoin-timeline-explained\" target=\"_blank\">noted Dogecoin fan Elon Musk<\/a> led the <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/291957\/elon-musk-and-doge-what-you-need-to-know-about-the-department-of-government-efficiency\" target=\"_blank\">Department of Government Efficiency<\/a> (DOGE), a program to slash budgets and cut jobs across the government. He has since stepped down from the role amid a <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/323892\/so-sad-trump-musk-break-up-tweets\" target=\"_blank\">messy public break-up with Trump<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 color=\"#333\">Crypto ambitions grow<\/h2>\n<p>Trump last year became the first current or former President of the U.S.\u2014that we know of\u2014to have used Bitcoin to buy something: At the popular New York City crypto bar, PubKey, the ex-President <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/250218\/bitcoin-boosters-get-trump-buy-burgers-btc\" target=\"_blank\">bought<\/a> a burger using the cryptocurrency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s the beginning of a new era,\u201d he said, referring to the digital asset industry. And it wasn\u2019t just talk: On January 17, he <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/301691\/donald-trump-drops-solana-meme-coin\" target=\"_blank\">launched a meme coin<\/a> running on Solana, and the token is now one of the most valuable meme coins in existence.<\/p>\n<p>The TRUMP token launch has been <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/314222\/us-lawmakers-clash-over-trump-meme-coin-launch-crypto-regulation\" target=\"_blank\">widely criticized by politicians<\/a> and analysts, and is seen by some as a potential avenue for corruption. But while the price is down sharply from the peak, it has continued to see trading demand, including in April when Trump revealed plans to <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/315967\/president-trump-solana-meme-coin-parabolic\" target=\"_blank\">host an exclusive dinner<\/a> for top TRUMP holders.<\/p>\n<p>Trump&#8217;s exclusive dinner\u2014held in May for the top 220 holders of the meme coin\u2014was a quaint event, <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/322156\/inside-trump-crypto-dinner\" target=\"_blank\">according<\/a> to attendees who spoke to <i>Decrypt<\/i>, and the president only made a brief appearance. VIP attendees, who got a special tour alongside access to the event, held an average of <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/319102\/trump-crypto-dinner-vip-attendees-4-8-million\" target=\"_blank\">$4.8 million worth of TRUMP<\/a> to get a top spot at the party.<\/p>\n<p>But the Republican, in his several five months in office, has made other, more serious campaign pledges a reality: He <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/309032\/president-trump-signs-executive-order-to-establish-bitcoin-reserve-crypto-stockpile\" target=\"_blank\">established a strategic Bitcoin reserve<\/a> and became the first president to <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/314409\/trump-first-president-sign-crypto-bill\" target=\"_blank\">sign a crypto-related bill into law<\/a>\u2014ending the IRS\u2019s so-called DeFi broker rule, which could have imperiled the development of crypto apps in America.<\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s SEC has also <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/308273\/trump-sec-ending-crypto-lawsuits-investigations\" target=\"_blank\">scrapped<\/a> numerous lawsuits and against crypto companies from the previous administration, and his family is continuing to\u2014albeit controversially\u2014push ahead with its own crypto ventures: Donald Trump Jr. and Eric Trump are <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/337922\/trump-bros-american-bitcoin-mining-stock-soars-plunges-public-debut\" target=\"_blank\">launched\u00a0American Bitcoin<\/a>, a collaboration with Bitcoin mining firm Hut8 that plans to become the \u201cworld\u2019s largest and most efficient Bitcoin miner.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The Trump sons are also <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/324070\/trump-crypto-wallet-isnt-moving-forward-eric-trump\" target=\"_blank\">planning<\/a> to launch a crypto wallet via their World Liberty Financial project. Initially, the TRUMP meme coin team said it would launch its own Trump-themed wallet, but that plan was canceled after <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/323914\/trump-crypto-wallet-goes-dark-cease-and-desist\" target=\"_blank\">a public (but short-lived) dispute<\/a> with Eric, Barron, and Don Jr. (The Trump family, interestingly, appears to have <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/326105\/trump-family-reduces-equity-stake-crypto-project-world-liberty\" target=\"_blank\">reduced its stake<\/a> in World Liberty.)<\/p>\n<p><span>More symbolically, Trump and his family have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/317435\/eric-trump-woke-cancel-culture-bitcoin-crypto\" target=\"_blank\"><span>spoken<\/span><\/a><span> out against big banks and what they deem to be censorship. In an August executive order, the president <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/334124\/trump-signs-order-prohibit-debanking-crypto-industry\" target=\"_blank\"><span>prohibited<\/span><\/a><span> the debanking of crypto-related companies, siding with industry leaders who&#8217;d previously complained about being mistreated by the TradFi world. <\/span><\/p>\n<p>Trump\u2019s media company Trump Media and Technology Group in March also <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/311415\/trump-media-teams-with-crypto-com-in-etf-push\" target=\"_blank\">signed<\/a> an agreement to team with Crypto.com to offer ETFs, with Trump Media itself planning to <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/315799\/trump-media-invest-250-million-made-in-america-etfs-tracking-crypto-energy\" target=\"_blank\">invest its own money into the products<\/a>. The companies have since teamed up to launch a treasury for Crypto.com&#8217;s Cronos (CRO) token, which will also be used across Trump Media&#8217;s Truth Social platforms. On top of all that, Trump Media <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/331015\/trump-media-2-billion-bitcoin-corporate-treasury\" target=\"_blank\">bought $2 billion<\/a> worth of Bitcoin and related securities in July after raising billions to do so.<\/p>\n<p>Trump critics have argued that the president\u2019s digital asset ventures constitute a conflict of interest; Silicon Valley bigwigs say he\u2019s pro-innovation.
