However, statutes allow SEC commissioners to serve up to an additional 18 months until the US Senate confirms a replacement.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of people have asked me what is next,\u201d said Peirce. \u201cI could leave the government and do a 180 on crypto, but that career path is too well-trodden for me. My plan long had been to transition to beekeeping\u2014honey is delicious and nutritious, and bees sting with less glee than most of my Twitter commenters.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She added, later clarifying that she was joking:\u00a0<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cFor post-SEC life, therefore, I must turn to Plan C, or more precisely, Plan NFT [&#8230;] My NFT collection is going to be a set of characters that I have encountered in the world of crypto, especially at its current, often uncomfortable intersection with policy.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><iframe width=\"100%\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/MOTp6j8yszs?start=\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Peirce, as one of four commissioners and three Republicans currently serving in the SEC\u2019s leadership, has often introduced and backed policy proposals favoring the crypto and blockchain industry. Following the departure of former Chair Gary Gensler in January, she <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/sec-crypto-task-force-hester-peirce-trump\" title=\"null\">announced the launch<\/a> of a crypto task force aimed at developing a framework for digital assets.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Related: <\/strong><\/em><a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/cftc-chair-crypto-nominees-list\" title=\"null\"><em><strong>Who\u2019s in the running to become the next CFTC chair?<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The SEC\u2019s \u201cCrypto Mom\u201d appeared to joke with the event\u2019s attendees, describing NFTs resembling her, crypto CEOs, figures from traditional finance, regulators and digital asset influencers before shifting to a serious note on the agency\u2019s future.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am sorry that over most of my tenure at the SEC I failed to convince my colleagues in government to give you a chance,\u201d said Peirce. \u201cI hope that you and others whom you have inspired will use this time\u2014a time in which regulatory clarity has replaced ambiguity as government\u2019s objective\u2014to build good things that will enhance the safety, security, happiness, and prosperity of your family, friends, neighbors, and nation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><template data-ct-widget=\"buzzsprout\" data-buzzsprout-podcast-id=\"2040516\" data-buzzsprout-episode-id=\"17907885\"><\/template><\/p>\n<h2>Shifting tone on crypto at the SEC since January<\/h2>\n<p>Peirce\u2019s comments were not unprecedented.
