ULAANBAATAR — Mongolia on Tuesday confirmed Zandanshatar Gombojav as its new prime minister, after his predecessor lost a confidence vote last week.
The ruling Mongolian People’s Party (MPP) nominated Zandanshatar, a former parliament speaker and hitherto chief of staff for the president, and 92% of lawmakers backed him in a vote shortly after midnight. He becomes the fifth prime minister in Mongolia’s democratic era to assume office without holding a parliamentary seat, a factor that some political analysts warn could undermine his legitimacy.
