TOKYO — A Japanese employee of Astellas Pharma was convicted of espionage on Wednesday and sentenced to three and a half years in prison by a Chinese court, in a judgment likely to further strain already tense bilateral ties.
The court in Beijing said the unnamed man was indicted on espionage charges, according to the Japanese embassy in China. It did not reveal any details of the alleged crime, a normal practice in the country, saying only that the accused was involved in spying activities.
