TOKYO — Eel, a popular food in Japan where it is known as unagi, could be added to the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species (CITES), which restricts the international trade of protected species.
The European Union is set to decide by Friday whether to propose the listing. If adopted, trade restrictions would significantly impact Japan, which imports 70% to 80% of the eel consumed in the country.
