{"id":76632,"date":"2026-04-29T08:58:41","date_gmt":"2026-04-29T01:58:41","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hbbgroup.net\/judge-rejects-new-trial-for-former-ftx-ceo-sam-bankman-fried\/"},"modified":"2026-04-29T08:58:41","modified_gmt":"2026-04-29T01:58:41","slug":"judge-rejects-new-trial-for-former-ftx-ceo-sam-bankman-fried","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hbbgroup.net\/vi\/judge-rejects-new-trial-for-former-ftx-ceo-sam-bankman-fried\/","title":{"rendered":"Judge rejects new trial for former FTX CEO Sam Bankman-Fried"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<p>A Manhattan federal judge has denied FTX CEO and co-founder Sam Bankman-Fried\u2019s motion for a new trial, rejecting his claim that there is new evidence.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Lewis Kaplan, who oversaw Bankman-Fried\u2019s trial in 2023 and sentenced him to 25 years in prison in early 2024, wrote in an <a href=\"https:\/\/www.courtlistener.com\/docket\/66631292\/595\/united-states-v-bankman-fried\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">order<\/a> on Tuesday that Bankman-Fried\u2019s claim of new evidence and witnesses was baseless.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis motion appears to be one part of a plan to rescue his reputation that Bankman-Fried hatched and even committed to writing after FTX declared bankruptcy but before he was indicted,\u201d Judge Kaplan wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Bankman-Fried in February had <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/sam-bankman-fried-ftx-new-trial-fraud-case\">requested a new trial<\/a> to be overseen by a different judge, making the rare move of filing a motion without consulting his lawyers and while an appeals court was considering his conviction and sentence.<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Bankman-Fried <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/sam-bankman-fried-withdraws-motion-new-trial-new-judge\">asked to withdraw<\/a> his request, telling Judge Kaplan he didn\u2019t believe he would \u201cget a fair hearing on this topic in front of you,\u201d which the judge denied.<\/p>\n<figure><img loading=\"lazy\" alt width=\"896\" height=\"504\" src=\"https:\/\/payload.cointelegraph.com\/api\/media\/file\/pasted-image-119.png?prefix=media%2Fcontent\" decoding=\"async\"><\/figure>\n<p><em>Sam Bankman-Fried appeared on a podcast in March 2025 while being held at the Metropolitan Detention Center in Brooklyn. Source: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=dN1CR2dyfo8\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><em>YouTube<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>In his order, Judge Kaplan wrote that Bankman-Fried\u2019s claim that three former FTX executives could counter the government\u2019s arguments that FTX was insolvent was \u201cbaseless on multiple independently sufficient levels.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNone of the witnesses, for example, is \u2018newly discovered.\u2019 Bankman-Fried well before trial knew all three of them and purportedly knew also what he hoped they would say were they to testify,\u201d Kaplan wrote.<\/p>\n<p>Bankman-Fried argued that two former FTX executives who didn\u2019t testify \u2014 Ryan Salame, the former CEO of FTX\u2019s Bahamian arm and Daniel Chapsky, FTX\u2019s former head of data science \u2014 could counter the government\u2019s claims about the exchange\u2019s financial health.<\/p>\n<p>Salame separately pleaded guilty to violating campaign finance laws and operating an illegal money-transmitting business.
