{"id":75032,"date":"2026-04-23T08:49:30","date_gmt":"2026-04-23T01:49:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hbbgroup.net\/us-government-runs-a-bitcoin-node-but-not-mining-btc-us-admiral\/"},"modified":"2026-04-23T08:49:30","modified_gmt":"2026-04-23T01:49:30","slug":"us-government-runs-a-bitcoin-node-but-not-mining-btc-us-admiral","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hbbgroup.net\/vi\/us-government-runs-a-bitcoin-node-but-not-mining-btc-us-admiral\/","title":{"rendered":"US Government Runs a Bitcoin Node, But Not Mining BTC: US Admiral"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<h4 color=\"#333\">In brief<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>A top U.S. military official said the government runs a Bitcoin node to test cybersecurity uses of the network.<\/li>\n<li>Admiral Samuel Paparo said the military sees Bitcoin mainly as a tool to help secure networks.<\/li>\n<li>He also praised stablecoin legislation for helping ensure the global dominance of the U.S. dollar.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>A top military official told Congress Wednesday that the U.S. government currently runs a node on the Bitcoin network, to conduct tests related to network security.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe have a node on the Bitcoin network right now,\u201d Admiral Samuel Paparo, commander of U.S. forces in the Pacific, told the House Armed Services Committee Wednesday.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cWe\u2019re not mining Bitcoin,\u201d he continued. \u201cWe\u2019re using it to monitor, and we\u2019re doing a number of operational tests to secure and protect networks using the Bitcoin protocol.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The Bitcoin blockchain relies on tens of thousands of <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-are-the-different-types-of-bitcoin-nodes-how-the-bitcoin-network-is-maintained\" target=\"_blank\"><span>nodes<\/span><\/a><span> situated around the world, which help secure and maintain the network. The node network is intentionally decentralized, meaning no one party has control over Bitcoin and its transaction validation process. That\u2019s a key innovation\u2014one that made the cryptocurrency so unique when it first debuted in 2009.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>If the U.S. government runs only one of the thousands of nodes that keep Bitcoin up and running, that involvement poses no threat to the network\u2019s independence. But America\u2019s operation of a node may nevertheless raise eyebrows, considering Bitcoin\u2019s \u201ccensorship resistance\u201d has long been <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/137130\/this-upgrad-could-make-it-harder-for-governments-to-\" target=\"_blank\"><span>framed<\/span><\/a><span> as a defense against takeover attempts by powerful nation states.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Admiral Paparo said Wednesday that the U.S. government is currently in an \u201cexperimentation\u201d phase when it comes to Bitcoin. But he also emphasized that the American military views Bitcoin as a highly valuable technological tool\u2014moreso than as a financial asset worth stockpiling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cOur interest in Bitcoin is as a tool of cryptography, a blockchain, and a reusable <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-is-proof-of-work-how-the-bitcoin-network-is-maintained\" target=\"_blank\"><span>proof-of-work<\/span><\/a><span>\u2014as an additional tool to secure networks, and to project power,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cFrom the military application standpoint, my interest in Bitcoin is as a computer science tool,\u201d he added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Paparo did later mention, though, that supporting hegemony of the U.S. dollar worldwide is in the American military\u2019s best interest.
