{"id":72681,"date":"2026-04-17T08:59:02","date_gmt":"2026-04-17T01:59:02","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hbbgroup.net\/quantum-proposal-wont-save-satoshis-bitcoin-says-cardano-founder-hoskinson\/"},"modified":"2026-04-17T08:59:02","modified_gmt":"2026-04-17T01:59:02","slug":"quantum-proposal-wont-save-satoshis-bitcoin-says-cardano-founder-hoskinson","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hbbgroup.net\/vi\/quantum-proposal-wont-save-satoshis-bitcoin-says-cardano-founder-hoskinson\/","title":{"rendered":"Quantum Proposal Won\u2019t Save Satoshi\u2019s Bitcoin, Says Cardano Founder Hoskinson"},"content":{"rendered":"<div>\n<div>\n<h4 color=\"#333\">In brief<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Cardano founder Charles Hoskinson says the latest Bitcoin improvement proposal won&#8217;t be able to save all the Bitcoin vulnerable to quantum computing. <\/li>\n<li>The proposal would block, then freeze old coins, across three phases before a potential recovery could take place for those that missed deadlines. <\/li>\n<li>Hoskinson says at least 1.7 million coins, from before 2013, would still be at risk of being stolen.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>A new <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-is-bitcoin-four-minute-instant-guide-explainer\" target=\"_blank\">Bitcoin<\/a> improvement proposal dubbed BIP-361 <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/364450\/new-bitcoin-proposal-would-freeze-coins-to-counter-quantum-threat\" target=\"_blank\"><span>seeks to save as much as 34% of Bitcoin\u2019s supply<\/span><\/a><span>\u2014or more than 7 million coins valued at $536 billion\u2014by freezing coins that don\u2019t migrate to quantum-resistant addresses in the future.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>But <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/cardano\" target=\"_blank\">Cardano<\/a> founder Charles Hoskinson says it will still leave as much as 1.7 million coins, or $127 billion worth of BTC, vulnerable.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>The proposal, which would play out over multiple years, is broken into three phases whereby older signature schemes on the network would be phased out. First, inflows to vulnerable addresses would be blocked, then legacy coins would be frozen, with the final phase allowing for the recovery of any Bitcoin held that missed movement deadlines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThat\u2019s a lie,\u201d Hoskinson said of the final phase, claiming that 1.7 million BTC would not be recoverable under the plan. \u201cIt\u2019s not possible.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou could recover some of the 8 million Bitcoin, but 1.7 million are not under this scheme,\u201d Hoskinson said. \u201cAll of the 2013 Bitcoin and before,\u201d he added, referring to Bitcoin held before the introduction of the key generation of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ledger.com\/academy\/bip-39-the-low-key-guardian-of-your-crypto-freedom\" target=\"_blank\"><span>BIP-39<\/span><\/a><span>, which introduced the seed phrase.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>At least 1.1 million of those coins Hoskinson pointed out belong to pseudonymous Bitcoin creator <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/satoshi-nakamoto\" target=\"_blank\"><span>Satoshi Nakomoto<\/span><\/a><span>, whose purported stash is believed to be worth as much as $82 billion, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/intel.arkm.com\/explorer\/entity\/satoshi-nakamoto\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener\"><span>according to data from Arkham Intelligence<\/span><\/a><span>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Nevertheless, Hoskinson said \u201cit\u2019s not a bad proposal.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cI understand why they wrote it,\u201d he said. \u201cBecause if they don\u2019t do this, that money will be stolen in the 2030s. That\u2019s a fact.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-q-day-quantum-threat-bitcoin-explained\" target=\"_blank\"><span>\u201cQ-Day,\u201d<\/span><\/a><span> or the name given to the looming threat at which point quantum computers can break Bitcoin\u2019s cryptography, has been an increasingly relevant topic of late.
