{"id":66511,"date":"2026-03-30T09:19:33","date_gmt":"2026-03-30T02:19:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/hbbgroup.net\/future-us-governments-could-crack-down-on-crypto-without-clear-rules-coin-center\/"},"modified":"2026-03-30T09:19:33","modified_gmt":"2026-03-30T02:19:33","slug":"future-us-governments-could-crack-down-on-crypto-without-clear-rules-coin-center","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/hbbgroup.net\/vi\/future-us-governments-could-crack-down-on-crypto-without-clear-rules-coin-center\/","title":{"rendered":"Future US governments could crack down on crypto without clear rules: Coin Center"},"content":{"rendered":"<p data-testid=\"post-description\">The CLARITY Act stalled in the Senate after banks, crypto firms, and lawmakers failed to reach an agreement on key provisions like allowing stablecoin yields.<\/p>\n<div>\n<div data-testid=\"html-renderer-container\">\n<p>Failing to pass the crypto market structure bill known as the CLARITY Act could leave the door open for a less industry-friendly future US government to crack down on crypto, according to Coin Center executive director Peter Van Valkenburgh.<\/p>\n<p>In an X post on Friday, Van Valkenburgh <a title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/valkenburgh\/status\/2037280314184106065\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/valkenburgh\/status\/2037280314184106065\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">argued<\/a> that rejecting developer protections in <a title=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/explained\/clarity-act-explained-what-it-means-for-crypto-week-and-beyond\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/explained\/clarity-act-explained-what-it-means-for-crypto-week-and-beyond\" target=\"_self\" rel>legislation like the CLARITY Act<\/a> and the Blockchain Regulatory Certainty Act in favor of \u201cshort-term business interests\u201d and the \u201ccontinued goodwill of those in charge\u201d could lead to a \u201cgrim\u201d future for the industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe point of passing CLARITY is not to trust this administration. It is to bind the next one,\u201d he said, adding:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cA world without CLARITY\u2019s statutory protections for developers is a world governed by prosecutorial discretion, political fashion, and fear.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The CLARITY Act has <a title=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/clarity-act-crypto-united-states-congress-galaxy-digital\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/clarity-act-crypto-united-states-congress-galaxy-digital\" target=\"_self\" rel>stalled in the Senate as banks<\/a>, crypto firms and lawmakers have continued to debate over key provisions \u2014 including whether to <a title=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/stablecoin-inflows-rebound-to-1-7b-as-washington-battles-over-yield-rules\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/stablecoin-inflows-rebound-to-1-7b-as-washington-battles-over-yield-rules\">allow third parties to offer stablecoin yields<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>The bill also covers a range of measures, including frameworks for registering crypto intermediaries, regulating digital assets and classifying tokens.<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2026-03\/019d3833-0f9e-7398-9c66-005ac8314277.png\"><figcaption><em>Source: <\/em><a title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/valkenburgh\/status\/2037280314184106065\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/valkenburgh\/status\/2037280314184106065\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\"><em>Peter Van Valkenburgh<\/em><\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<h2>Nothing set in stone without legislation<\/h2>\n<p>Van Valkenburgh also predicts that, without legislative clarification, a future US administration\u2019s Department of Justice could <a title=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/vitalik-buterin-support-roman-storm-privacy-concerns\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/vitalik-buterin-support-roman-storm-privacy-concerns\" target=\"_self\" rel>ramp up prosecutions of privacy-tool developers<\/a> as unlicensed money transmitters, and that existing regulatory interpretive guidance could be revoked.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Related: <\/strong><\/em><a title=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/crypto-sentiment-rise-clarity-passed-bessent\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/crypto-sentiment-rise-clarity-passed-bessent\"><em><strong>Crypto investor sentiment will rise once CLARITY Act is passed: Bessent<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Since former SEC Chair Gary Gensler resigned on Jan. 20, 2025, crypto proponents have seen a regulatory shift by the SEC, including the<a title=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/sec-dismisses-lawsuit-against-coinbase\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/sec-dismisses-lawsuit-against-coinbase\"> dismissal of several long-running enforcement<\/a> actions against crypto firms and friendlier guidance on how the agency will treat crypto.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf we lose this moment because we thought we\u2019d have a bit more revenue and a bit more latitude under the short-term friendly discretion of the current administration, then we lose our way,\u201d Van Valkenburgh said.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe fail to stand up for the kind of transparency, neutrality, and openness that crypto stands for.
