But there is one important place to start: more competition.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div>\n<blockquote>\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">In 2026, I plan to be fully back to decentralized social.<\/p>\n<p>If we want a better society, we need better mass communication tools. We need mass communication tools that surface the best information and arguments and help people find points of agreement. We need mass communication\u2026 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ye249HsojJ\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">https:\/\/t.co\/ye249HsojJ<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 vitalik.eth (@VitalikButerin) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/VitalikButerin\/status\/2013884907659944205?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-wpel-link=\"internal\">January 21, 2026<\/a><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<\/div>\n<p><span>\u201cDecentralization is the way to enable that: a shared data layer, with anyone being able to build their own client on top,\u201d he added.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>Buterin\u2019s remarks came after Lens Protocol, the social platform built by the development team behind Ethereum DeFi protocol Aave, announced on Tuesday that <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/lens.xyz\/news\/mask-network-to-steward-the-next-chapter-of-lens\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener\"><span>Mask Network would \u201csteward the next chapter<\/span><\/a><span>\u201d for the decentralized protocol.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>On Wednesday, Farcaster made a similar announcement, detailing that its protocol smart contracts, code, the Farcaster app, and its acquired token launchpad, Clanker, will all be transferred to Neynar\u2014a longstanding Farcaster client and infrastructure firm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cThis wasn\u2019t an easy decision. Farcaster and the people building on it mean a lot to us,&#8221; <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/dwr\/status\/2014045233189888483?s=20\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener\"><span>posted Farcaster co-founder Dan Romero on X<\/span><\/a><span>. \u201cWe\u2019re proud of what our team built, and what the community built alongside us. But after five years, it\u2019s clear Farcaster needs a new approach and leadership to reach its full potential.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>That new approach will come less than two years after the platform raised $150 million in a Series A which <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/231644\/ethereum-based-twitter-rival-farcaster-raises-150-million\" target=\"_blank\"><span>valued the company at $1 billion<\/span><\/a><span> and sought to expand its active user base and developer primitives. Farcaster\u2019s team <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/farcaster.xyz\/dwr\/0x4368f6be\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener\"><span>recently said<\/span><\/a><span> that it would pivot focus towards wallet development after the \u201csocial-first\u201d approach failed to maintain momentum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>While neither platform currently has a native token of its own, Buterin claims that most crypto social projects have inserted something speculative and considered it innovative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span>\u201cToo often, we in crypto think that if you insert a speculative coin into something, that counts as \u2018innovating,\u2019 and moves the world forward,\u201d he posted.
