They require search engines to verify users&#8217; ages using methods including photo ID, face scanning, credit cards, digital ID, parental consent, AI, or third-party verification.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.esafety.gov.au\/sites\/default\/files\/2025-12\/OnlineSafetyCodesandStandardsRegulatoryGuidanceDec2025.pdf?v=1767050073790\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">According<\/a> to regulatory guidance, the highest-level safety filters must be applied by default to accounts suspected of being operated by someone under 18; companies must create a reporting mechanism to flag violators; and search results must be filtered for unsafe content such as pornography and graphic violence.<\/p>\n<p>Privacy and free speech campaigners hold significant concerns about the regulations.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\">Jason Bassler, the co-founder of The Free Thought Project podcast, <a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JasonBassler1\/status\/2005739097202254061\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> in an X post on Monday that \u201cstarting 2 days ago, Australians are now required to upload their ID to use a search engine,\u201d and speculated the country is the \u201cbeta test for a world where freedom and privacy quietly die&#8230; and it won&#8217;t stop there.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2025-12\/019b6d1c-0b8f-70e9-999c-455d21e8afea.png\" title><figcaption><em>Source: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JasonBassler1\/status\/2005739097202254061\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/x.com\/JasonBassler1\/status\/2005739097202254061\"><em>Jason Bassler<\/em><\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The requirements come hot on the heels of Australia <a href=\"https:\/\/www.esafety.gov.au\/about-us\/industry-regulation\/social-media-age-restrictions\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">restricting<\/a> access to social media platforms for users under 16, a law that went into force on Dec. 10.<\/p>\n<h2>Ireland pushing for social media verification in EU<\/h2>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\">The Irish government has announced plans to push similar age verification measures for social media users across Europe when it <a href=\"https:\/\/www.gov.ie\/en\/department-of-foreign-affairs\/speeches\/ireland-2026-looking-towards-our-eu-presidency-remarks-by-the-minister-of-state-for-european-affairs-and-defence-thomas-byrne\/#:~:text=In%20considering%20the%20contribution%20we,Union%2C%20for%20the%20eighth%20time.\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">assumes<\/a> the EU Council\u2019s presidency in July 2026.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Its proposed measures would also ban anonymous accounts in the EU and require ID to post on social media under the guise of cracking down on hate and disinformation online, <a href=\"https:\/\/extra.ie\/2025\/12\/28\/news\/simon-harris-social-media-regulations\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">according<\/a> to Irish news site Extra.ie.<\/p>\n<p>T\u00e1naiste, Ireland\u2019s deputy prime minister, Simon Harris, told the publication that Media Minister Patrick O\u2019Donovan will bring forward the proposal next year. <\/p>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\">\u201cWe have a digital age of consent in Ireland, which is 16, but it\u2019s simply not being enforced. And I think that\u2019s a really important move. And then I think there\u2019s the broader issue, which will require work that\u2019s not just at an Irish level, around the anonymous bots,\u201d Harris said.<\/p>\n<p><template data-ct-widget=\"buzzsprout\" data-buzzsprout-podcast-id=\"2040516\" data-buzzsprout-episode-id=\"18384699\"><\/template><\/p>\n<p>A Dublin woman was recently given a six-month prison sentence for sending social media messages to Harris, allegedly calling him a murderer and wishing harm to his family.<\/p>\n<h2>US claps back at foreign regulators over First Amendment concerns<\/h2>\n<p>Moves in Australia and Europe to crack down on social media companies have drawn a sharp response from the Trump administration.<\/p>\n<p>US Undersecretary of State for Public Diplomacy Sarah Rogers claimed that regulators in the UK and the EU are trying to censor US-based platforms and undermine the protections offered by the First Amendment.<\/p>\n<blockquote data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\"><p>\u201cAnd cumulatively what all of these hostilities really announce is that Europe and the UK and other governments abroad are trying to nullify the American first amendment by enforcing against American companies and American speakers on American soil.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>In June, Ofcom, the regulator and competition authority for the UK communications industries, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ofcom.org.uk\/online-safety\/illegal-and-harmful-content\/investigation-into-4chan-and-its-compliance-with-duties-to-protect-its-users-from-illegal-content\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">opened<\/a> an investigation and threatened to fine the New York-based discussion board 4chan for violations of the <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/signal-hints-leaving-uk-following-online-safety-bill\" rel target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/signal-hints-leaving-uk-following-online-safety-bill\">UK&#8217;s Online Safety Act 2023<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\"><em><strong>Related: <\/strong><\/em><a internet\u2019<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Some of the more radical responses being considered by the US include the Wyoming GRANITE Act, which <a href=\"https:\/\/prestonbyrne.com\/2025\/11\/19\/the-full-text-of-the-wyoming-granite-act\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">proposes<\/a> allowing US persons, individuals, or companies to sue foreign governments that attempt to impose censorship or content-moderation rules on them.<\/p>\n<p>The US State Department also <a href=\"https:\/\/www.state.gov\/releases\/office-of-the-spokesperson\/2025\/12\/announcement-of-actions-to-combat-the-global-censorship-industrial-complex\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">announced<\/a> sanctions against five EU officials on Dec. 23, which it accused of leading \u201corganized efforts to coerce American platforms to censor, demonetize, and suppress American viewpoints they oppose.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\"><em><strong>Magazine: <\/strong><\/em><a
