US President Donald Trump said he pardoned Binance founder Changpeng \u201cCZ\u201d Zhao after lobbying and support by \u201ca lot of people\u201d that told him he wasn\u2019t guilty.\u00a0<\/p>\n

CZ\u2019s pardon was signed on Wednesday, and Binance confirmed the presidential order<\/a> to Cointelegraph in a statement.<\/p>\n

During a press conference on Thursday, Trump said<\/a> he chose to pardon the Binance founder because he \u201cwas recommended by a lot of people,\u201d had a lot of support and \u201cpeople say that he wasn\u2019t guilty of anything.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cI don\u2019t know him, I don\u2019t believe I\u2019ve ever met him, but I\u2019ve been told he had a lot of support, and they said that what he did is not even a crime, it wasn\u2019t a crime, he was persecuted by the Biden Administration.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

Zhao was given a four-month prison sentence after pleading guilty to one count of violating the US Bank Secrecy Act for failing to maintain an effective anti\u2013money laundering program at Binance.<\/p>\n

CZ\u2019s crypto attorney Teresa Goody Guill\u00e9n on Thursday said<\/a> the pardon was the right call because her client had \u201ca single charge of failure to have an effective compliance program. NO fraud, NO victims, NO criminal history. NO money laundering.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cCZ is the first and only known first-time offender in US history to receive a prison sentence for this single, non-fraud-related charge,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe judge found NO evidence that he knew of any illicit transactions and that it was reasonable for him to believe there were no illicit funds on the platform.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n

CZ ready to get back to work<\/h2>\n

Following the pardon, CZ took to X and said<\/a> he was \u201cdeeply grateful,\u201d and would do \u201ceverything we can to help make America the Capital of Crypto and advance Web3 worldwide.\u201d<\/p>\n

As part of his plea deal with authorities, CZ was forced to step down as CEO<\/a> of Binance and was prohibited from working at the exchange. A pardon could allow him to rejoin Binance.<\/p>\n
