Ethereum could eventually surpass Bitcoin\u2019s market share in a similar manner to how US equities overtook gold 54 years ago, when the US abandoned the gold standard, according to BitMEX chair Tom Lee.<\/p>\n

\u201cEthereum could flip Bitcoin similar to how Wall Street and equities flipped gold post 71,\u201d Lee said<\/a> in an interview with ARK Invest CEO Cathie Wood on Thursday.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Bitcoin\u2019s (BTC<\/a>) market capitalization is about 4.6 times larger than Ethereum\u2019s, standing at roughly $2.17 trillion compared to $476.33 billion, according<\/a> to CoinMarketCap.<\/p>\n

Lee brings up the \u201cNixon Shock\u201d to support Ethereum’s argument<\/h2>\n

Lee, who oversees BitMine\u2019s Ethereum accumulation strategy, suggested Ethereum could rise in the same way the US dollar rose to dominance after 1971, after US President Richard Nixon made the US dollar \u201cfully synthetic\u201d and no longer backed by gold<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Lee said that when that happened, \u201cThe immediate beneficiary was demand and a market to own gold.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

However, in response, \u201cWall Street created products that made the dollar dominant, and the market cap of equities today is 40 trillion compared to 2 trillion for gold,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cDollar dominance by the end of that period went from 27% in GDP terms but to 57% of central bank reserves, and 80% of financial transactions, quotes,\u201d he said, adding:<\/p>\n

\u201cDollar dominance is going to be the opportunity of Ethereum,\u201d he said, adding this will be because of \u201ceverything becoming\u2026tokenized.\u201d\u00a0<\/p>\n

The flippening has been an ongoing debate for years<\/h2>\n

\u201cSo as we move dollars onto the blockchain, which is stablecoins, we\u2019ll move stocks and real estate,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

However, he emphasized that it is still a \u201cworking theory\u201d and that he remains a Bitcoin bull.<\/p>\n
