It also proposes that the government confirm it does not intend to change the definition of legal tender or introduce a central bank digital currency.<\/p>\n<p>The lawmakers argue that Bitcoin could serve as a complement to gold and foreign exchange reserves. They describe the cryptocurrency as \u201cdigital gold\u201d with the potential to diversify state holdings and provide inflation protection.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBy building a strategic Bitcoin reserve, Sweden is positioning itself for a potentially disruptive shift in the global financial infrastructure,\u201d the proposal stated.<\/p>\n<h2 color=\"#333\">National Bitcoin reserves around the world<\/h2>\n<p>Momentum for <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/resources\/what-is-a-strategic-bitcoin-reserve-how-nation-states-could-hold-btc\" target=\"_blank\">state-level Bitcoin reserves<\/a> has grown internationally, particularly since March, when U.S. President Donald Trump <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/309032\/president-trump-signs-executive-order-to-establish-bitcoin-reserve-crypto-stockpile\" target=\"_blank\">signed<\/a> an executive order establishing a national Bitcoin reserve funded with confiscated assets.<\/p>\n<p>While countries like Bhutan and El Salvador already held Bitcoin prior to this, the shift in U.S. policy has prompted a rethink of other nations around their approach to cryptocurrencies.<\/p>\n<p>Several countries, such as the <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/342482\/uk-government-keep-7-billion-stolen-bitcoin-iseized\" target=\"_blank\">UK<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/china\/china-debates-how-handle-criminal-crypto-cache-2025-04-15\/\" target=\"_blank\">China<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcointreasuries.net\/governments\/finland\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener\">Finland<\/a>, have unofficial \u201creserves\u201d of <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/342482\/uk-government-keep-7-billion-stolen-bitcoin-iseized\" target=\"_blank\">confiscated digital assets<\/a> seized during criminal investigations, but politicians in countries like <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/news-explorer?pinned=823092&#038;title=polish-presidential-candidate-mentzen-pledges-to-create-bitcoin-reserve-if-elected\" target=\"_blank\">Poland<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mitrade.com\/insights\/news\/live-news\/article-3-818085-20250513\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener\">Latvia<\/a> have also floated the idea of establishing strategic Bitcoin reserves.<\/p>\n<p>Last week, Kazakhstan launched a state-backed crypto reserve containing <span><a href=\"http:\/\/decrypt.co\/price\/binance-coin\" target=\"_blank\">BNB<\/a><\/span> (BNB is the native token of the BNB Chain created by the exchange Binance, which <a href=\"https:\/\/www.binance.com\/en-AE\/square\/post\/681762\" target=\"_blank\">signed an MOU<\/a> with the Kazakh government in 2022).<\/p>\n<p>At the U.S. state level, Texas, Arizona and New Hampshire have <a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoinlaws.io\/reserve-race\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener\">passed<\/a> laws to create their own reserves.<\/p>\n<p>The Swedish proposal comes as other lawmakers in Sweden have raised similar calls. Earlier this year, Dioukarev and another MP, Rickard Nordin, separately <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/314814\/another-swedish-lawmaker-bitcoin-national-reserves\" target=\"_blank\">pressed<\/a> Finance Minister Elisabeth Svantesson to reconsider Sweden\u2019s cautious stance in light of Bitcoin\u2019s growing role abroad.<\/p>\n<p>Proponents in Sweden argue that adding Bitcoin to national reserves could reduce overall correlation among assets already in its reserve.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGold and foreign exchange reserves are traditional asset classes that are correlated with political, geopolitical and economic risks. In contrast, Bitcoin\u2019s value is not driven by the monetary policies of individual states,\u201d the motion noted\u2014though Bitcoin does in fact follow general market trends.<\/p>\n<p>Financial institutions have also weighed in. A recent paper from Deutsche Bank Research <a href=\"https:\/\/www.dbresearch.com\/PROD\/RI-PROD\/PDFVIEWER.calias?pdfViewerPdfUrl=PROD0000000000603643\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener\">said<\/a> central banks are reassessing their reserves amid inflation and geopolitical uncertainty. \u201cWhile Bitcoin still faces many critics, it has increasingly become a household name,\u201d the bank wrote, citing greater liquidity and institutional involvement.<\/p>\n<p>But it warned that the asset remains volatile, vulnerable to fraud and relatively illiquid compared with gold.<\/p>\n<p>The U.S. plan has also drawn criticism, with opponents arguing it could benefit political leaders personally and expose markets to instability.<\/p>\n<p>In March, the late Democratic Congressman Gerry Connolly <a href=\"https:\/\/oversightdemocrats.house.gov\/news\/press-releases\/ranking-member-connolly-urges-treasury-cease-plans-establish-strategic\" target=\"_blank\">wrote<\/a> that the reserve constituted \u201cunsound fiscal policy\u201d offering \u201cno discernible benefit\u201d to Americans.
