Source: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/bitcoin.gob.sv\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/bitcoin.gob.sv\/\"><em>El Salvador Bitcoin Office<\/em><\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Despite El Salvador being the first country in the world to adopt Bitcoin as legal tender and establish a strategic reserve, the government <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/el-salvador-bitcoin-payment-voluntary-imf-loan-deal\" title=\"null\">pulled back its Bitcoin policies<\/a> to comply with a loan deal from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), a supranational financial institution.<\/p>\n<p>The country\u2019s four-year-long Bitcoin experiment has yielded mixed results, leaving the Bitcoin community <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/el-salvador-s-failed-bitcoin-experiment\" title=\"null\">divided on the outcome<\/a> of the first example of nation-state-level Bitcoin adoption.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Related: <\/strong><\/em><a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/el-salvador-splits-bitcoin-holdings-across-multiple-wallets\" title=\"null\"><em><strong>El Salvador splits $678M Bitcoin across 14 wallets to reduce quantum risk<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>El Salvador\u2019s Bitcoin experiment four years on yields mixed results<\/h2>\n<p>El Salvador\u2019s legislature <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/el-salvador-rushes-new-bitcoin-laws-comply-imf-deal-reuters\" title=\"null\">repealed the Bitcoin legal tender law<\/a> and agreed not to purchase additional Bitcoin using public funds as part of a $1.4 billion loan deal with the IMF in January.<\/p>\n<p>The government also agreed to pare back support for its Chivo Bitcoin wallet, which saw limited use among residents of the country.<\/p>\n<p><iframe width=\"100%\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/4DhWzl-Kiso?start=\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>The IMF published a <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/www.elibrary.imf.org\/view\/journals\/002\/2025\/190\/002.2025.issue-190-en.xml?cid=568621-com-dsp-crossref&#038;ref=btctimes.com\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"null\">report<\/a> in July revealing that El Salvador has <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/el-salvador-hasn-t-bought-bitcoin-deal-imf\" title=\"null\">not purchased any new Bitcoin<\/a> since signing the $1.4 billion loan agreement in December 2024, sending <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/x.com\/coinbureau\/status\/1946585830790983948\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"null\">shockwaves<\/a> through the crypto community.<\/p>\n<p>Included in the IMF report was a letter of intent signed by El Salvador\u2019s central bank president, Douglas Pablo Rodr\u00edguez Fuentes, and minister of finance, Jerson Rogelio Posada Molina, confirming that the government\u2019s BTC balance has not changed.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" alt=\"Bitcoin Regulation, El Salvador, Bitcoin Adoption\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2025-07\/01981e97-38c7-73b5-b289-f3cd08018285\" title><figcaption><em>The letter of intent included in the IMF report, signed by financial officials from El Salvador, confirming that the country\u2019s BTC balance has not grown.
