KATHMANDU — Democracy is under strain in Nepal as a growing number of disillusioned voters call for the restoration of the monarchy.
On May 29, thousands flooded the streets of Kathmandu, the capital of the Himalayan nation, demanding the return of the former king as head of state. “Come back King, save the country,” they chanted in unison, waving national flags and black umbrellas, a symbol of royal protection, as the sound of drums echoed through the city.
