BANGKOK/YANGON — Myanmar’s leader has offered to dispatch a high-level tariff negotiation team to the U.S. if needed and asked for an easing of economic sanctions against his country in a letter addressed to President Donald Trump, the military government said Thursday.
Senior Gen. Min Aung Hlaing was responding to a letter Trump sent on Monday in which the U.S. president lowered the “reciprocal” tariff rate on goods from Myanmar to 40% from the 44% announced in April. The U.S. does not officially recognize the military government that took control in 2021, making Trump’s letter an unusual gesture.
