BENGALURU — India’s trade gap with the U.S. narrowed in June on account of a surge in imports, according to data released Tuesday, as New Delhi works to ink a trade deal ahead of Washington’s Aug. 1 deadline for new tariffs.
India, earlier chastised by U.S. President Donald Trump for high import taxes and threatened with a 26% “reciprocal” tariff, shipped goods worth $8.29 billion to the U.S. in June, 6% lower than May, according to India’s commerce ministry. Imports rose 10% to $3.99 billion during this period, with the trade deficit between the two countries narrowing by 17.5% to $4.3 billion.
