SYDNEY — Australia and the U.K. said on Friday that they will sign a 50-year bilateral treaty aimed at cementing the existing AUKUS submarine pact with the U.S., sending a clear signal that they remain firmly committed to the three-way security agreement amid concerns the administration of President Donald Trump may not be.
“A new 50 year AUKUS treaty will underpin the U.K. and Australian submarine programmes, support tens of thousands of jobs in the UK and Australia, enhance both nations’ industrial capacity, and deliver the submarines that keep the U.K. and our allies safe,” the U.K. said in a release.
