        "rendered": "<div>\n<div>\n<h4 color=\"#333\">In brief<\/h4>\n<ul>\n<li>Peter Jackson said he believes AI in filmmaking is no different from other visual effects tools.<\/li>\n<li>The \u201cLord of the Rings\u201d director said fears around AI may hurt recognition for performance-capture actors.<\/li>\n<li>Demi Moore said Hollywood should learn how to work with AI, because resisting it is likely futile.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<p>Artificial intelligence took center stage at this year\u2019s Cannes Film Festival as filmmakers and actors debated how the technology will reshape performance-capture acting, digital likeness protections, and filmmaking in Hollywood.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a Cannes masterclass after receiving an honorary Palme d\u2019Or award, \u201cThe Lord of the Rings\u201d trilogy director Peter Jackson defended the use of AI in filmmaking and warned that fears surrounding the technology could overshadow human performances, according to a <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/festivals\/peter-jackson-dont-dislike-ai-hunt-for-gollum-cannes-1236747009\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">report<\/a> by <i>Variety<\/i>.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTo me, it\u2019s just a special effect,\u201d Jackson said. \u201cIt\u2019s no different from other special effects.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jackson said concerns about AI should focus less on the technology itself and more on how studios and companies use actors\u2019 likenesses. He said digital recreations become problematic when performers lose control over their image or identity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you\u2019re doing an AI duplicate of somebody, like Indiana Jones or anyone else\u2014as long as you\u2019ve licensed the rights off the person who you\u2019re showing, I don\u2019t see the issue,\u201d Jackson said. He added that the problem is \u201cwhen people\u2019s likenesses get stolen and usurped.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jackson also suggested the current climate around AI may make it harder for performance-capture actors to receive recognition from award bodies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhich is a bit unfair, especially in the Andy Serkis case where it\u2019s not an AI-generated performance, it\u2019s a human-generated performance 100% of the way,\u201d Jackson said.<\/p>\n<p>Jackson\u2019s comments come as the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences and <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/news\/golden-globes-ai-rules-1236740750\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">others<\/a> tighten rules around AI in filmmaking. Earlier this month, the Academy announced that it is <a href=\"https:\/\/decrypt.co\/366405\/oscars-ban-ai-performances-screenplays-eligibility\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">barring<\/a> AI-generated performances and screenplays from Oscar eligibility unless human actors and writers remain at the center of the work.<\/p>\n<p>Also at Cannes, actress Demi Moore <a href=\"https:\/\/variety.com\/2026\/film\/festivals\/demi-moore-ai-hollywood-cannes-must-work-with-it-1236745587\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said<\/a> Hollywood needs to adapt to AI instead of trying to block its growth across the entertainment industry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAI is here. And so to fight it is to fight something that is a battle that we will lose,\u201d she said. \u201cSo to find ways in which we can work with it I think is a more valuable path to take.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Moore added that Hollywood is \u201cprobably not\u201d doing enough to protect itself from AI-related risks.
