        "rendered": "<div data-testid=\"html-renderer-container\">\n<p>The chair of the Commodity Futures Trading Commission (CFTC), Michael Selig, said he would not wait for the appointment of additional commissioners to lead the regulatory agency before moving ahead on rulemaking potentially related to digital assets and prediction markets.<\/p>\n<p>In a Thursday hearing of the House Agriculture Committee, Selig <a title=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=o10gZ_3EUVw\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=o10gZ_3EUVw\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">responded<\/a> to questions from ranking member Angie Craig, who called out the lack of leadership at the CFTC, which normally has a bipartisan panel of five commissioners. The Minnesota representative asked the chair to commit to not finalizing regulations while he is the only commissioner. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the interim, we cannot, for the sake of the American people, slow down in our rulemaking,\u201d said Selig. \u201cIt\u2019s very important that we get investor protections, consumer protections and safeguards for our markets. Selig has been outspoken about claiming that the agency has \u201cexclusive jurisdiction\u201d over prediction markets as the companies behind some platforms face state-level lawsuits related to sports betting laws and proposed legislation to crack down on insider trading.<\/p>\n<h2>CFTC\u2019s legal fight over prediction market continues<\/h2>\n<p>Gaming authorities in several US states have filed lawsuits against prediction market companies like Kalshi and Polymarket, alleging the platforms offered sports betting in violation of state laws.<\/p>\n<p><iframe width=\"100%\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/UY2LtqofHqQ?start=\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>New Mexico Representative Gabe Vasquez questioned Selig at Thursday\u2019s hearing with a visual aid showing that bets on event contracts and through state-level gaming \u201caren\u2019t much of a difference, yet they are regulated completely differently.\u201d He accused the CFTC of using \u201cloopholes\u201d to bypass state laws and requirements for prediction markets, causing some jurisdictions to miss out on revenue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe CFTC was not created or intended to regulate sports gambling,\u201d said Vasquez, adding:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cAre we regulating real economic risk, or are we allowing prediction markets to steal billions of dollars in an unregulated free-for-all, with no consumer protection as Congress and the CFTC turns a blind eye?\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Companies like Kalshi have argued that they are under the sole jurisdiction of the CFTC.
