Demonstrations escalated nationwide, with Iran\u2019s regime responding by cutting internet access, carrying out mass arrests, and reportedly killing thousands. <\/p>\n<p>Chainalysis <a href=\"https:\/\/www.chainalysis.com\/blog\/iranian-crypto-activity-geopolitical-tensions-2026\/\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">said<\/a> in a report on Thursday that <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/learn\/articles\/what-is-a-cryptocurrency-a-beginners-guide-to-digital-money\" rel target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/learn\/articles\/what-is-a-cryptocurrency-a-beginners-guide-to-digital-money\">Iran\u2019s crypto ecosystem<\/a> hit $7.78 billion in 2025, which accelerated amid the ongoing unrest with a substantial increase in the number of daily crypto transfers and the amounts transacted.<\/p>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\">\u201cMost telling is the surge in withdrawals from Iranian exchanges to unattributed personal Bitcoin wallets. This surge suggests Iranians are taking possession of Bitcoin at a markedly higher rate during protests than they were beforehand,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThis behavior represents a rational response to the collapse of the Iranian rial, which has lost nearly all of its value, rendering it effectively worthless against major currencies like the euro.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<figure>    <img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2026-01\/019bc46e-79b5-7a7b-9d7e-a9cd78b85717.png\" title><figcaption><em>There has been a substantial increase in the number of daily crypto transfers and the amount transacted during unrest in Iran. Source: <\/em><a href=\"https:\/\/www.chainalysis.com\/blog\/iranian-crypto-activity-geopolitical-tensions-2026\/\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/www.chainalysis.com\/blog\/iranian-crypto-activity-geopolitical-tensions-2026\/\"><em>Chainalysis<\/em><\/a><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Chainalysis noted that Iran\u2019s government has also turned to crypto, with the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps\u2019 (IRGC) crypto activity accounting for half of the total crypto ecosystem in the fourth quarter of 2025, with IRGC-associated addresses receiving more than $3 billion in total last year.\u00a0 <\/p>\n<h2>Crypto part of the resistance<\/h2>\n<p>Chainalysis said Bitcoin\u2019s (<a href=\"http:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/bitcoin-price\">BTC<\/a>) role during the unrest in Iran <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/can-bitcoin-really-be-a-store-of-value-what-pension-funds-are-starting-to-discover\" rel target=\"_self\" title=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/can-bitcoin-really-be-a-store-of-value-what-pension-funds-are-starting-to-discover\">isn\u2019t just confined to capital preservation<\/a>; it\u2019s also become \u201can element of resistance, providing liquidity and optionality in an increasingly restricted economic environment.\u201d<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cUnlike traditional assets that are illiquid and often subject to government control, BTC\u2019s censorship-resistant and self-custodial nature offers financial flexibility \u2014 particularly valuable in a situation where individuals may need to flee or operate outside government-controlled financial channels.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\">Chainalysis said it has found other regions experiencing \u201cwar, economic turmoil, or government crackdowns\u201d have also seen increased Bitcoin withdrawals during times of instability.<\/p>\n<p><template data-ct-widget=\"buzzsprout\" data-buzzsprout-podcast-id=\"2040516\" data-buzzsprout-episode-id=\"18489765\"><\/template><\/p>\n<h2>Crypto likely to remain crucial tool\u00a0\u00a0<\/h2>\n<p data-ct-non-breakable=\"undefined\">TRM Labs <a href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/iran-crypto-flows-fall-israel-conflict-nobitex-hack\">tracked roughly $3.7 billion in total crypto<\/a> flows in Iran between January and July 2025.
