Vanguard, the second-largest asset manager in the world, is set to allow its clients to start trading crypto exchange-traded funds and mutual funds on its platform starting Tuesday, reversing its previous stance on digital asset ETFs.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Spurred by persistent retail and institutional demand, Vanguard will permit third-party access to crypto ETFs<\/a> and mutual funds similar to how the firm treats gold, a Vanguard spokesperson confirmed to Cointelegraph in a statement.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Bloomberg reported that only ETFs that meet regulatory standards will be included, such as Bitcoin (BTC<\/a>), Ether (ETH<\/a>), XRP (XRP<\/a>) and Solana (SOL<\/a>)-related ETFs. <\/p>\n

The investment manager told Cointelegraph it has ruled out memecoins as well as creating its own crypto ETFs and mutual funds.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe serve millions of investors who have diverse needs and risk profiles, and we aim to provide a brokerage trading platform that gives our brokerage clients the ability to invest in products they choose,\u201d the Vanguard spokesperson said.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Vanguard is second only to BlackRock as an asset manager, with over $11 trillion in global assets under management as of January, according to the company\u2019s latest report.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Vanguard had ruled out crypto ETFs due to volatility concerns<\/h2>\n

Vanguard was previously against offering crypto ETFs on its platform, citing<\/a> volatility and the speculative nature of the assets.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Its former CEO, Tim Buckley, was also strongly opposed<\/a>, saying in a May 2024 video that the company doesn\u2019t \u201cbelieve it belongs, like a Bitcoin ETF belongs in a long-term portfolio of someone saving for their retirement. It\u2019s a speculative asset.\u201d<\/p>\n

Buckley announced<\/a> he was stepping down as CEO in February 2024 and retired at the end of that year.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Change of heart could open the crypto floodgates<\/h2>\n

Some X users speculate that Vanguard\u2019s policy shift could open the floodgates to new investors and spike crypto prices. Crypto analyst and investor Nilesh Rohilla said<\/a> he would be surprised if Bitcoin doesn\u2019t jump\u00a0 \u201c5% in this news in the next 24 hrs.\u201d<\/p>\n
