        "rendered": "<div data-v-43e640e6>\n<p>The government of British Columbia is banning new crypto mining connections to the hydro power grid, citing unprecedented electricity demand.<\/p>\n<p>In a <a href=\"https:\/\/news.gov.bc.ca\/releases\/2025ECS0044-001032\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/news.gov.bc.ca\/releases\/2025ECS0044-001032\">statement<\/a> on Monday, the British Columbia (BC) government announced a set of new legislation aimed at stimulating the economy and helping the state-owned electric utility provider BC Hydro address its power availability.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are significant opportunities in British Columbia\u2019s traditional natural resource sectors, including mining, natural gas and LNG, and in emerging sectors, such as data centers and artificial intelligence (AI). The success of proposed major projects hinges on access to reliable, clean electricity at a competitive industrial rate,\u201d it wrote. <\/p>\n<p>As part of the regulatory changes that will go into effect in fall 2025, there will be \u201climits on the power available for data centers and AI,\u201d as well as a permanent \u201cban on new BC Hydro connections to the electricity grid\u201d for crypto miners.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2025-10\/019a054d-48b8-7ab5-971a-2e448528b705\" title><figcaption><em>Hydro power center in British Columbia. The Province\u2019s strategy empowers BC Hydro to manage this growth responsibly, keeping our grid reliable and our energy future clean and affordable,\u201d said Charlotte Mitha, president and CEO of BC Hydro.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>BC Hydro is the main power supplier in the region, serving more than 5 million people, around 95% of the local population, as <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bchydro.com\/toolbar\/about.html\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\">per<\/a> its website. <\/p>\n<div>\n<p>The BC government took a more positive outlook for data centers and AI than crypto mining though, with the announcement explaining that it is looking to help these two emerging sectors grow \u201cin a manner that results in the greatest benefit to people in British Columbia.\u201d <\/p>\n<p>With crypto however, background information in the announcement outlines that the ban on new hydro grid connections by crypto miners is due to \u201cdisproportionate energy consumption and limited economic benefit,\u201d offered by the sector.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<h2><strong>Crypto mining analysts say otherwise<\/strong><\/h2>\n<p>While the crypto mining sector has faced flak from some governments and organizations over energy consumption, many in the sector have been fighting back on the misconception. <\/p>\n<p><template data-ct-widget=\"buzzsprout\" data-buzzsprout-podcast-id=\"2040516\" data-buzzsprout-episode-id=\"17674691\"><\/template><\/p>\n<p>Figures such as <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/bitcoin-energy-consumption-fud-came-digiconomist\">Bitcoin environmentalist<\/a> Daniel Batten have fought hard to rectify negative narratives surrounding crypto mining and educate on ways that Bitcoin mining can be incorporated among energy climate action initiatives.\u00a0<\/p>\n<figure><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2025-10\/019a054d-4f58-76ae-96dc-925ebb9bf279\" title><figcaption><em>Some of Batten\u2019s recent push back against crypto enviromental FUD.
