When Cartman touts a market on whether Kyle\u2019s mom would \u201cstrike Gaza and destroy a Palestinian hospital,\u201d the irate Kyle takes his case up with FCC chair Brendan Carr.<\/p>\n<p>Perhaps unsurprisingly, prediction markets seized on the free publicity afforded by South Park, launching their own markets on what might be mentioned during the episode\u2014including whether they themselves would be named.<\/p>\n<p>In the event, South Park singled out Polymarket and Kalshi as the targets of its scabrous criticism\u2014but the majority of predictions across all platforms failed to forecast whether leading prediction markets would be named during the episode.<\/p>\n<p>On Myriad, a prediction market launched by <i>Decrypt<\/i>\u2019s parent company DASTAN, just over 27% of predictions expected the episode to <a href=\"https:\/\/myriad.markets\/markets\/will-south-park-mention-myriad-polymarket-or-kalshi\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener\">mention it, Polymarket or Kalshi<\/a> ahead of broadcast.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/kalshi.com\/markets\/kxsouthparkmention\/south-park-mention\/kxsouthparkmention-25sep24\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow external noopener\">Kalshi<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/polymarket.com\/event\/what-will-be-said-during-south-park-prediction-market-episode-tonight?tid=1758731676480\" target=\"_blank\">Polymarket<\/a> users saw the chance of their respective platforms being mentioned hovering around 20% immediately before the episode aired.<\/p>\n<p>That\u2019s not necessarily a surprising result, DASTAN CEO Loxley Fernandes told <i>Decrypt<\/i>, who argued that it is \u201cfundamentally incorrect\u201d to consider prediction markets as \u201cthe new source of truth.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile prediction markets can help us root out truth or information in ways that traditional reporting and polling can\u2019t, we have to remember that prediction markets are simply a financialized form of consumer sentiment aggregation,\u201d he explained.<\/p>\n<p>As for why consumer sentiment was wide of the mark in the case of South Park, Fernandes pointed out that prediction market users may have expected South Park to parody prediction markets in general, rather than naming specific companies.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsers may have assumed that platforms like South Park Studios would utilize satire and appeal to humor by creating comical derivative names of prediction markets, instead of just saying Kalshi or Polymarket,\u201d he said, adding that they might also have anticipated that \u201ccopyright or trademark infringement issues\u201d would prevent South Park from using actual brand names.<\/p>\n<p>In retrospect, perhaps predictors should\u2019ve been bolder in their assumptions.
