        "rendered": "<div data-gtm-locator=\"articles\" data-v-43e640e6>\n<article id=\"article-214552\" data-v-43e640e6>\n<p itemprop=\"description\" data-v-43e640e6> The USDm stablecoin, built with Ethena and backed by tokenized treasuries, will use its yield to subsidize Ethereum sequencer fees. <\/p>\n<div data-v-43e640e6><picture><source media=\"(min-width: 1200px)\" ><source media=\"(min-width: 992px)\" ><source media=\"(min-width: 768px)\" ><source media=\"(min-width: 480px)\" ><img  loading=\"eager\" fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/images.cointelegraph.com\/cdn-cgi\/image\/format=auto,onerror=redirect,quality=90,width=1434\/https:\/\/s3.cointelegraph.com\/uploads\/2025-06\/01979bb8-2d3c-7ec7-8bab-8e03e0336977\" alt=\"Ethereum L2 MegaETH introduces yield-bearing stablecoin to fund protocol\"><\/picture><\/div>\n<div data-v-43e640e6>\n<div data-v-43e640e6>\n<p>MegaETH, an Ethereum layer-2 protocol backed by Vitalik Buterin, <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/www.megaeth.com\/blog-news\/megaeth-introduces-usdm\" rel=\"noopener nofollow\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"null\">announced<\/a> the upcoming launch of a yield-bearing stablecoin that might give it a different business model than traditional L2s, which drive revenue through transaction fees.<\/p>\n<p>The stablecoin, USDm, is being developed in partnership with Ethena, an algorithmic stablecoin protocol <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/defillama.com\/protocol\/ethena\" rel=\"https:\/\/defillama.com\/protocol\/ethena\" target=\"https:\/\/defillama.com\/protocol\/ethena\" title=\"https:\/\/defillama.com\/protocol\/ethena\">with<\/a> $13 billion in total value locked (TVL). It will launch on Ethena\u2019s USDtb infrastructure, which channels reserves into BlackRock\u2019s BUIDL \u2014 a tokenized US Treasury bill fund with a $2.2 billion market cap and steady yield, <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/app.rwa.xyz\/assets\/BUIDL\" rel=\"https:\/\/app.rwa.xyz\/assets\/BUIDL\" target=\"https:\/\/app.rwa.xyz\/assets\/BUIDL\" title=\"https:\/\/app.rwa.xyz\/assets\/BUIDL\">according<\/a> to RWA.xyz.<\/p>\n<p>Yield from the stablecoin\u2019s reserves will reportedly be used to offset sequencer fees, the Ethereum gas costs a layer-2 incurs when publishing batches of transactions to the main chain.<\/p>\n<p>The proposed model might lower the need for sequencer fees, instead drawing on yield from an alternative source. In a statement, MegaETH co-founder Shuyao Kong said that the USDm stablecoin would \u201clower fees for users\u201d and allow for \u201cmore expressive design space for applications.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><iframe width=\"100%\" height=\"315\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/20zFEDQdKl8?start=\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen loading=\"lazy\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Yield-bearing stablecoins are digital assets <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/learn\/articles\/yield-bearing-vs-traditional-stablecoins\" title=\"null\">pegged to another asset, such as a fiat currency, and that generates yield<\/a> to holders. <\/p>\n<p>The supply of yield-bearing stablecoins has surged following the passage of the GENIUS Act in the United States, which bans issuers from offering yield-generating stablecoins. Ethena\u2019s USDe and Sky\u2019s USDS have been among the main <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/yield-bearing-stablecoin-supply-surges-after-genius-act\" rel=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/yield-bearing-stablecoin-supply-surges-after-genius-act\" target=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/yield-bearing-stablecoin-supply-surges-after-genius-act\" title=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/yield-bearing-stablecoin-supply-surges-after-genius-act\">beneficiaries of the strict rules<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em><strong>Related: <\/strong><\/em><a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/ethereum-devs-l2-leaders-all-in-based-native-rollups\" title=\"null\"><em><strong>Ethereum devs and L2 leaders go all in on based and native rollups<\/strong><\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<h2>Fees on Ethereum<\/h2>\n<p>Sequencer fees have caused controversy, specifically in the Ethereum ecosystem, where some believe the network <a data-ct-non-breakable=\"null\" href=\"https:\/\/cointelegraph.com\/news\/layer-2s-good-for-ethereum-or-extractive\" title=\"null\">should demand more of the fee pie<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>According to Token Terminal, Ethereum has <a href=\"https:\/\/tokenterminal.com\/explorer\/projects\/ethereum?metric1=fees&#038;interval=365d\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\" target=\"_blank\" title=\"https:\/\/tokenterminal.com\/explorer\/projects\/ethereum?metric1=fees&#038;interval=365d\">collected<\/a> $1.1 billion in fees in the past calendar year.
