TOKYO — Japanese telecom NTT has been on a mission to help industries reduce their electricity consumption by promoting a switch to optical fibers from copper wires for everything from long-distance communications to signal transmissions inside computers.
Optical connections have the advantage of being more energy efficient than copper wire ones. They lose less energy in the form of heat and are less prone to signal attenuation — meaning signals weaken as they travel through copper or optical fiber lines.
