HONG KONG — Gou Lili and her boyfriend had already broken up when she found out she was pregnant.
Gou, a former banker living in Jinzhou, a Chinese port city midway between Beijing and North Korea, decided to go ahead with the pregnancy on her own, giving birth to a baby girl in 2023. She is now enjoying the challenge of raising and imparting knowledge to her daughter, such as explaining how a candle’s flame can come in different colors.
